It has to be a sign and trade with jersey. They said they are willing to do that though. Read it on tsn today.
Also pretty good interview with Babcock from dreger. Nothing new you learned but still decent. - bryant
question becomes, what does New Jersey want in exchange for Kovalchuk |

They sure threw the book at him....
Clearly he'll now know that half a year's worth of recovery time equals missing maybe a week of hockey himself. Suspensions of course never match injury length, but...what does this even do?
All it says is that teams should absolutely go out there and cripple players on the opposite team. They'll barely miss any time for it. - FlareKnight
I'm really unclear why when handing out suspensions the duration of the injury isn't taken into account. What would be so difficult to say... "until player X returns from injury"... independent of financial penalty.
That would penalize both the player and the team for whom the dirt bag plays.
The president already exists... high sticking gets your two or four or potentially more. Hits from behind and boarding calls CLEARLY have been graded by impact.

Was looking for a stay at home guy on a reasonable contract not long term, until our dmen develop and a veteran presence affordable, who would not cost us a Nylander. - Aetherial
I wonder what the relationship was like between Brendan Smith and Babcock during their time in Detroit.
Smith has (in my opinion) looked okay - pretty good during the playoffs for the Rangers. |

Yeah and it kind of sounds like he may dictate where he would want to go. |

he probably does have a desired team... Maybe a perennial contender like Washington or Chicago or Pittsburgh |

NHLPA would never agree to it, and neither would the owners.
Imagine this: Ovie slew-foots a 4th liner on the Rangers.
How tempting would it be for the Rangers to put Mr. 4th liner on Robidas Island?
Washington has a giant hole in their line-up, and they are franked on the salary cap. |

Ovechkin would deserve the suspension |

Wonder what kind of value Hyman and brown would have out there. I think kap could replace one of them. Maybe rychel too. - TonkaPhaneuf

He will want to play for a stanley cup contender.
Not the leafs yet. - Fakepartofme
At the risk of being called a blue Kool-aid chugger, I'm not so sure your statement is true anymore.
Leafs were 5th in scoring last year. They employed a 1/1A forward line system.
I would imagine Kovalchuk would like the idea of coming to a team that is stacked with young centres, where he could be shifted around on the top 2 lines and get plenty of scoring chances.
Now if you'll excuse me, all this typing has made me thirsty...

How bout adding Marleau and Thornton from the Sharks. The Leafs are closer than the Sharks to the Cup and imagine Marleau on Matthews left wing (incredibe) with Thornton playing 4th line C having the ability to move up the line-up in case of injuries.
Jumbo Joe, bring the cup home! |

I love Thornton.
I respect what Marleau can bring to a team.
But I'm having a hard time figuring out where we would put two 37 year old centres into next year's line-up.
They each scored less than Matthews, Kadri, Bozak, Nylander and Marner.
So we kinda already have enough guys to play centre on our top 3 lines.

I don't know, but playing Thornton on the 4th line with the likes of Matt Martin, might force him to shoot more. Since he wouldn't be able to pass to anyone |
