More so need a minute munching defensive damn. We have 3 offensive dman already. We also need a top six winger but kapanen might be that. - bmoney411
I dont see Kap as a top 6...just a quality bottom 6 who can score key goals. |

So who do the Leafs take in the 17 spot? - TheMussel
I'm hoping for a guy who can immediately step into the lineup and win the Norris in 2017-18, while getting strong Conn Smythe Trophy consideration.

I wouldn't surprised if they trade it as part of a package for a good defenseman.
If they don't: Hague, Foote, Brannstrom, Valimaki. Maybe trade up for Liljegren if he falls a bit.
Basically any defenceman |

Last year on a 4.5 million deal.
If we can't extend him by deadline for a reasonable price and term, ship him out.
Or if he doesn't land us the D we need in the offseason... which pretty much limits trading him to contenders.
Also he has some kind of limited NTC asshattery in his contract |

Id like to keep him too, he brings quality 2nd line scoring.
But
We need D.
and he would be the piece to move
unless we move a 1st and prospects. |

I get it. But he might take a haircut to stick around, hes been through the poop already with the team. They want guys that want to be here. A vet but still a young enough guy to grow with the yutes. |

Would rather have Manson - cheaper, younger, meaner, more upside for me. If the Leafs want a bigger softer d-man Tyler Myers might be had, Trouba would be great. Problem is dealing with the wienerhead in Winnipeg. - winsix
Was looking for a stay at home guy on a reasonable contract not long term, until our dmen develop and a veteran presence affordable, who would not cost us a Nylander.

No thanks.
Soft and no heart. Opposite of what the leafs are trying to build
Plus on the jersey board they think they'll get a 1st and a top 4 dman....or Drouin. - Fakepartofme

Is Kovalchuk still property of NJ? (I'm not back-reading). If he is then they can have him. If he's considered a FA I'd take a stab. |

Wonder what kind of value Hyman and brown would have out there. I think kap could replace one of them. Maybe rychel too. |

Not sure if he still has it but the dude was a pretty unique talent. He was a truck with hands. Doesn't hurt to have that on the wing if it comes at a good price.

he is still property of the Devils, so at best, it would be a sign and trade deal |

Sign Boyle to two year deal.
done. - Fakepartofme
exactly...
don't know what they label the contract as ... but give him a "bonus" or whatever in the first year - say 2M... and then 1.5/year
that makes him infinitely tradeable in the 2nd year of the deal if the Goat recovers - and the Leafs aren't tied into him past 34 years old.
something like that. |

The signing of journeyman Ben Smith was thought to be solely for qualifying for expansion exposure purposes, but the 28-year-old filled a fourth line/faceoff specialist/penalty killer role well until suffering a hand injury last December.
What
Also, forgetting fehr is under contract? - burn
seriously though... if the rest of the roster gets the idea that Smith is the "plan" going forward... I'd be asking questions.
Smith is expansion draft fodder and nothing more... he could be a injury call up guy from the Marlies... but nothing more. If Boyle isn't an option then the Leafs should look at re-aquring Froese. I really don't want to watch Smith lose another face-off. |

But Radulov didn't cost them anything.
If Kovalchuk was a UFA, sure, go for it. Roll the dice.
But I'm not willing to give up assets to obtain him. No thank you.
And just to put it in further perspective:
The Leafs were 5th in the league in scoring last year.
They were 22nd in keeping the puck out of their own net.
Trade JVR for a defenceman.
Put Kapanen in the lineup.
Sit back and enjoy.
That is all. - Atomic Wedgie
If the Leafs have a deal for JvR ... then they would be better off going after FA Radulov over Kovalchuk.... and it p__ the Habs off as well.

It has to be a sign and trade with jersey. They said they are willing to do that though. Read it on tsn today.
Also pretty good interview with Babcock from dreger. Nothing new you learned but still decent. |
