I wonder what it would cost to trade for kovalchuk. I would take him on a 2-3 year contract.
- bryant

No thanks.
Soft and no heart. Opposite of what the leafs are trying to build
Plus on the jersey board they think they'll get a 1st and a top 4 dman....or Drouin.

I'd still trade two cups for the problems the Kings face with the cap right now.

They are nuts! 6th round pick and a 1 year CHEAP deal.

I agree. I don't think he commands a high price tag. If we could get him for cheap and trade JVR for a solid piece I'd do it. He could slot in nicely on a 2nd/3rd line and PP.
- Aaron_85

That's what I was thinking. Trade jvr for a dman, and put together a package for kovalchuck and hope he can replace some of jvr production.

It’ll probably take 3 years at $5.5M. something like iginla’s last deal.

How about just trade JVR for a dman, and call it a day?

I don't want Kovalchuk for about 8 reasons.

He's too old and he's too selfish are the top reasons.

But there are others.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a try if it was a one year deal. Worked out pretty well for Montreal with Radulov.

But Radulov didn't cost them anything.

If Kovalchuk was a UFA, sure, go for it. Roll the dice.

But I'm not willing to give up assets to obtain him. No thank you.

And just to put it in further perspective:

The Leafs were 5th in the league in scoring last year.

They were 22nd in keeping the puck out of their own net.

Trade JVR for a defenceman.

Put Kapanen in the lineup.

Sit back and enjoy.

That is all.

Oshie would want 7 years with a decent contract. I don't think leafs want to go that long with a player like oshie. I could be wrong though. Would love shorter term deals whie keeping the core moving forward.

I'm assuming he won't cost much. But yeah, they don't really NEED him. Address the defense and Jimmy Hoffa Marincin and I'll be happy.

I wouldn't trade any player off the current roster but probably some players in the pipeline and 2nd or 3rd rounder.

The signing of journeyman Ben Smith was thought to be solely for qualifying for expansion exposure purposes, but the 28-year-old filled a fourth line/faceoff specialist/penalty killer role well until suffering a hand injury last December.

What

Also, forgetting fehr is under contract?

Would be tough, but 1 for 1. probably yes.

Doughty is only 27. Plus, our biggest need is D.

- PatC80

More so need a minute munching defensive damn. We have 3 offensive dman already. We also need a top six winger but kapanen might be that.

Marincin gone

I like Leivo. Always seemed to produce when he got in the lineup. Got a bit of the Corrado treatment though for some reason. I would protect him over Lipstick for instance.

for whatever reason, he seems to be a spare part.

I’d be ok with trading for kovy, as long as its spare parts.

In all honesty I would expect

Kovalchuk + Schneider for 6th overall and then the Golden Knights sign Dadonov and move to the KHL to win the Gagagrin Cup
