Let me just reiterate something said here many times. The more you pay to retain talent, the less you have to improve your team.
- John Jaeckel

Ugh is right. Quite the jump from his last contract

2 mil for 3 years would have been max, that 800k could have been better used somewhere else. Stan just making his job that much tougher this summer

I thought Panik would have been in the $2-2.25M range. Do you think it's an overpay?

Also, I know you hate the Anisimov deal JJ, but I am fine with the term and dollars. What I don't understand is the NMC. WTF is with Stan and dishing those out.

Anything over 1.85 is overpaying. He is a career third liner.

Not to mention he was buried in the AHL before coming here. You would think after the Hawks picked him off of the scrap heap and created a situation for him to succeed at the NHL level that he would accept something around that 1.85. But I don't blame Panik for taking that 2.8, Stan just doesn't know how to negotiate. At least there aren't any movement clauses

2.8M? Another overpay for Bowman. I like Panik but not at 2.8M. If he is getting that kind of raise he better be a fixture in the top 6 netting 20 both years of the deal.

IMHO, Panik brings a couple things to the table the Blackhawks need more of:
1.) actually hitting the opponent (led the team in hits), and;
2.) ability to piss off the opponent/make the opponent take stupid penalties.

Also, this signing indicates to me the FO has some confidence they will be able to move some of the NMC/NTC money.

That or Panarin. Which to me seems more likely today than it did yesterday.

I'm a bit surprised at the AAV on this one. It's higher than what I'd have expected. But Panik has speed, strength, and some finish -- he might be worth it in the end.

"At $2.8 million per year, Panik left money on the table but credit to the player for knowing a good fit when he sees one. Smart decision" ..... Pierre LeBrun

I could see Hjalmarsson, Anisimov and Kruger being moved with prospects and picks to bring in a 1/2LW (Druin?/Palat?), a 2C, 2nd pairing right defender.

2 and 2.8 is MORE than fair for Panik. I was expecting between 3-3.3 honestly. Look at what career third liners are getting on the open market these days. Benoit Pouliot got a 5-year $20 mil dollar deal a couple years ago for crying out loud. Even if Panik doesn't match this year's production he's still a vital piece the Hawks need more of. He's the only bit of "nasty" left on this team. He plays hard, is fast, and is still ascending. Great first move.

The question is are the Hocks a lottery team in 2018 or in 2019? God I am still enjoying the Preds sweep. Was that the worst Chicago series loss that you can remember?

This validates the theory that a big contract is moving. No way to fit that raise into the current salary structure without someone being gone.

Gotta think that the only way this contract is signed is that Stan knows he has a taker for one of the big contracts on this team.

My money is on Panarin getting dealt. Would prefer to see the Seabrook contract dealt (even if I think Seabrook the player isn't as bad as a lot of people make him out to be).

OMG! Again, Stan pays at the top of the range. We just have NO ability to pay that extra bit. I'm pissed about this signing.

In so many cases, Stan has simply paid at the high end of the range. You gotta be able to lose someone, Stan.

Maybe $2.8m is a fair price for Panik, going rate. But NOT ON OUR TEAM. We simply can't afford it. The example: Crawford or Seabrook. I believe both of those guys got "market". I have no problem with their $$ for them. But we sit here today and would gladly move one or both of those two for nothing. So those were fair, market contracts, but not fair and market FOR OUR TEAM.

Panik at $2.8m does not work for our team!.

Panik - excellent value signing. Grit, size, speed, talent, and I think more upside. For that price, he is a lower line salary with upper line upside.

Imagine what he might have been awarded in arbitration, and then you weigh losing him versus yet another hole to fill.

If Panik plays the way he played last year each of the next two years, 2.8 million is not a bad contract. This extension just points more and more to a move to send salary out of Chicago.

If my math is correct with a projected cap of 73ish, Hawks are a solid 3 million over and still have sign future HOF Michael Kempny and the coveted Jurco......

But the Hawks were dominant in February and march so all is well, and only lost 1-0 in game 1 and in OT in game 3......we will just ignore the other 2 games, lack of adjustments, and effort.

The worst, Hmm
2010 against the flyers - Nope that yielded a cup
Maybe 2013 v the Bruins - ahh same result
How about the Lightening in 2015. Again nope a cup there as well.

Let me think about comparable troll series . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
