Look at the Panik signing another way. The hawks currently have a 9 man core earning $60m. Kane/Toews/Hoss/AA/Bread/Seab/Dunc/Hammer/Crow. $60m.
That leaves them $15 m in a $75m cap to fill 14 roster spots (and remember, they have the bonus carry-over to eat up a couple million $$ of that $15m). So effectively, all $1m players. Rookies and has-beens.

If they trade a core player, they will move to an 8 player core at $54m, meaning the makeup of the team will be:
8 @ $54m
$2m bonus carry-over
15 $1m players.
That leaves $4m of flexibility gained from losing a core player to upgrade the 15 $1m players to better qulaity.

$4m to spread around to upgrade those 15 rookies and has-beens.
They just used $1.8m of that $4m on Panik upgrade.

Are we happy using 45% of that money on the Panik upgrade? I'm not!

The question is are the Hocks a lottery team in 2018 or in 2019? God I am still enjoying the Preds sweep. Was that the worst Chicago series loss that you can remember?

Which of your stars are you looking for Perry, Kesler and their merry band of Anaheim henchmen knocking out for the season?

Panik - excellent value signing. Grit, size, speed, talent, and I think more upside. For that price, he is a lower line salary with upper line upside.

Imagine what he might have been awarded in arbitration, and then you weigh losing him versus yet another hole to fill.

We shall see......is a top 6 player on a cup contender or a solid role player? If he can produce 15 g a year and provide that physical/pest play in the bottom 6 I like the signing.

One would think Bowman is jettisoning Marcus Kruger off the island and another player making at least 3+ million.

First round exit to an 8 seed is pretty bad, but it was a bandaid loss. There are no moral victories. Only cups and losses. The Hawks having won the cup 3 times in recent years, its better to get stomped in the first round than lose in the conference finals like 14 vs LA. Nashville not having a cup its probably different, but if you guys do win it, youll understand the feeling the next year... All or nothing.

My money is on Panarin going to Vegas for a decent return - especially given all of the special allowances being offered to Vegas.

Kruger is gone, and I would think AA will be dealt as well.

No question Stan will have to earn his money this summer, rather than eat potato chips watching other teams get better.

He can but he needs approval from said player.............

My money is on AA if I had to pick one.

2-99.9 he isn't going anywhere
7-see 2
4-your best defensemen
50-dont have the darling safety blanket anymore
88-they trade him and I will show up to 1901 w Madison with a lighted torch
19-see 2
81-possible and I think somewhere like Montreal makes sense IF he wanted to where it's more of a European culture.
16-99.9 he is getting traded
72-I know everyone wants to trade him but where is the goal production going to come from? Depth didn't provide much and this line the past 2 years has carried this team.

so that leaves 15.....bowman is naïve enough to think 8 can play center and 67 can fill in for 16 and 70 center line 4

I hope they add more but they need tto subtract a lot to get cap compliant.

Why am I having recurring thoughts that Marian Hossa has played his last game in a Hawks uniform? He already played this season for a paltry $4M in wages, further pay cut to $1M isnt happening - trade/LTIR?

If Panik can be a 20/20 forward, playing both wings and bring a physical element to his came and all of this consistently then $2.8 million is fair market value.

Now, that being said it will be interesting to see how Stan fits this contract into the overall scheme. At first glance I don't like this move, I can't say that I hate it, but I don't like it. It's more that I would have expected, but only by around $500,000. At least it's just a 2 year deal. I wonder if Stan paid a little bit more to keep the deal shorter. Would a 3 year deal for around $2.5 million been better?

I don't see Kruger, AA and Panarin all being gone this summer. Definitely one of them, maybe two, but not all three.

I look at it in a similar but slightly different way. I think 4 stays because he is your best defenseman AND is a bargain at $4mil. Trading #4 may be easier based on his modified NTC vs. a full NMC, but it leaves the biggest hole with a lower amount of $'s to re-fill. Emotionally, 15 & 16 are the easier to move for the fan base. #72 is a tough one. No one replaces his scoring, but his contract makes him movable, tough call. You subtract him you better hope #50 is healthy and stands on his head all season to win a bunch of 1-0 or 2-1 games because this team is not going to score alot.

CHI: What do we have to do to keep TvR?
LV: We like Panik, but have to ensure we get to the cap floor.

CHI: What about 2 year, $2.8M per?
Panik: Umm... yes.... What's the catch?
CHI: Nothing, we loved the way you played and think it's a fair offer.
Panik: Ok...

CHI: Done.
LV: Perfect.

Does seem from the quotes coming out right now, that Panik may have realized after-the-fact that it means he is now expose-able to LV.

my first thought, almost exactly. he was signing a deal another team was comfortable with (specifically vegas).

They can protect Kruger, Panik, and Hartman along with Hossa, Toews, Kane, and AA and be fine.....Panarin isn't eligible

Keith Seabrook Hammer protected
Crawford protected

Odds are 57 is gone.
