I do think there are players we can add in free agency as well.

Besides Shattenkirk and Alzner

Brendan Smith
Michael Stone
Jonny Oduya
Michael Del Zotto
Trevor Dailey
Brian Campbell
Dimity Kulikov (yes I would still see if he would be interested in coming back)
Kris Russel

Smith, Del Zotto, Dailey/Campbell wold be my targets

- MCGUIZZY

I like the idea of Smith.

I would take DZ/Campbell but I think those would be the only ones I'd make a play for. I doubt Kulikov returns here.

I think Washington blows it up this summer.

Reinhart and the 8th for Ovechkin.

- BeadyEyedDouche

Add next year's first and Evander Kane and they might consider.

Yeah right. Reinhart is a former #2, can learn under Backstrom and Ovechkin has a massive salary (10 million/per) with 5 years left. Throw in Kane sure, but unless they want to keep some salary, what other options do they have and who would throw them anything close?

We'd get a 30+ goal guy for Eichel's wing, who's already 31 btw.

Washington drafts a D and gets a young center.

But Washington needs to do something, that core is not going to beat Pittsburgh, ever and they constantly underachieve.

Depends on WAS ownership. Ovi is the face of the franchise and one of the well known players league wide. He has to drive amazing revenue for them business wise.

Don't think this would ever happen.

Agreed. I don't think that owner would stand for a total tear down of that team. I do think if they go out to Pitt again that won't retain any of their free agents and try to get some new blood that way.

That's not untrue, but how much longer are the fans going to buy into the current core and what are Washington's best options? For that team, it honestly might be to trade Ovechkin at this point. Too much pressure/focus on their "star" player. If they want to do a retool, since a rebuild is unrealistic for them, then trading Ovechkin for a high draft pick and a young, former #2 overall who's already had a couple of seasons and hopefully is primed for a breakout year.

Worth the risk for both teams, IMO. Ovechkin being on the hook for $10 million for the next 4 years could cripple them, whereas we avoid having to deal with Reinhart's contract negotiations, have Gorges coming off the books next summer, can buy out Moulson or hopefully, one of him or Ennis or Bogosian gets picked up by Las Vegas. Kane's contract is up and if he isn't traded, that's another 5 million off the books.

I get that everyone wants that young stud D-man but I think getting Eichel a scoring winger is more important. We can hopefully nab a guy in FA this summer.

We could end up having an Ovechkin/Eichel/Okposo line 1 with ROR centering line 2 between Baptiste/Bailey/Nylander/etc...

Guhle for almost certain on the team, supposedly we're getting Antipin, Nelson could still be a decent 3rd pairing guy and McCabe is going to be a solid player still IMO despite the late season regression that I'm firmly blaming on the coach.

We should be more focused on outscoring opponents than trying to play stingy defense, IMO.

They don't need a total teardown. But they need to do something. Holtby isn't going anywhere, neither is Backstrom. They don't have D to spare and their most valuable asset is Ovechkin.

Do they want to win a championship? Their window is closing. I think their best chance is to dump Ovechkin, in all honesty and as crazy as it sounds. They can unload him for a few key pieces and get younger in the process while still competing.

I don't think Yzerman trades him unless someone overpays. And that would be an overpayment.
