Yeah it seems like it's probably something that there is a lot of grey area on. I haven't the slightest idea.

Regardless, I'm sure they could tell him "look, either you accept a trade or we have to bury you in the minors" and with one year left on his deal I can't imagine he'd want to ride the bus in Syracuse.

i believe his NTC still exists. but there are times players can lose them.

Example: if the canucks trade Tanev before July 1, the new team can choose to keep or get rid of his NTC.

Garrison was traded while his NTC was active. Garrison had the option to waive it once or void it completely. I don’t know why a player would ever void it completely.

Trouba for Drouin seems like a fair trade for both which is why it won't happen.

I think Tampa would have to add. R.H. #1 defensemen are not a dime a dozen.

The cap increase is going to put it at about 76 Million which is where I got my 20Million number based on the current roster. That does not include a trade of Garrison, who has a full no trade so don't think he's just going anywhere.

Which team is going to trade for Garrison and keep his NTC in tact that Garrison would agree to go to?

$20M is enough to sign TJ, palat, sustr, a backup and bridge drouin.

most people didn't think yzerman would find a sucker to take fillpula; at least without salary retention. i don't doubt he could move garrison.

Sorry we don't have the option of saying oh he wants to go home and play there as Vancouver is going to be a mess for a while. So which cup contender is going to want him? Sure Yzerman will trade him if he can, but who is that magical partner? There was little to no market to move D men at the trade deadline so who's doing it now?

i doubt he waives to go to back to vancouver. that and i don't see the nucks cheap owner wanting to overpay players with no playoff revenue.

maybe vegas can be enticed to take him at the draft.

I doubt he goes to Vancouver too. My point is that I see a rebuilding team willing to take him for a year for a draft pick.

It was suppose to be Garrison and Filppula to Toronto according to the local media here in Tampa but Filppula nixed the trade using his NMC which forced Yzerman to move Val to Philly and keep Garrison. The thing with Garrison is he is a serviceable dman on a one year contract with a 4.6M cap but only 2.5M salary. I think he would go anywhere that is in the south or back to Canada to play his final year of this deal. What if Arizona said they would take him then it helps them get to the cap floor but only cost 2.5M to save money, who knows Garrison might go for just one year and bang the poop out of all the Arizona co-eds that would be swarming over him... lol...

These Ek scenarios are absent of teams who have the assets that they can afford to move to get the deal done. None of those teams can afford to lose a top pairing D. Last time that happened it was for a franchise Center by Preds who had 5 top 4 D then.

No team has that depth now. Especially Preds playing journeyman Yanick Weber so often. The last team to move a top pairing D was no the never scoring Devils, for in Ek's words, superstar, 1OA Hall. No one in this 2017 draft is rated even close to superstar status. So no that won't work on trades either. Only a dumping team will be to send a top pairing D for yet to prove much Drouin.

A team competes with D and threatens with scoring potential. Only a rebuilding team can then afford to let go a top pairing D to not compete and leave the fan base just entertained on the potential of Drouin.

Sorry Ek but not a sound analysis based on reality and NHL trades.

To improve the D yes we will need to shed salary, but we have room to keep Drouin, TJ, and Palat. Your acquisition of Fillpula gave us that flexibility so thanks for that.

That was hextall paying back Yzerman for when he gave us gudas and Travis konecny for Coburn. And for him out bidding us for carle.

Why would he do that when he has 2 potentially 3 rookie defenseman coming up this year ? Who are all better players..

i didn't say it would be a smart move.

not sure about running 2-3 rookie dmen, plus your sophomores.

didn't work out so well for dallas

I think this might be the year where GMs finally use offer sheets on young talent.

There are many excellent young RFAs like Draisatl, Johansen, Kuznetsov, Pastrnak, Drouin, Wennberg, Gostisbehere, Parayko, Horvat available.

I mean, you can sign those guys between 5.5 and 7.5M and all you need to give up is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round choice. None of those would normally be available at this price in a trade, it's actually a discount.

I mean, offer 7.495M or just under the limit on a 1 or 2-year deal for a player on that list, and most of those teams would have tough choices to make if they decide to match because they would be against the cap.

For a teams that always draft in the 20s, and not really well, with plenty of picks in the next two drafs like Montreal, i would try that. Even if it means having to deal with some frustrated GMs.
