It would surprise me greatly. I disagree that protecting Manning is a waste of space. His is a cost controlled and cheap depth defenseman that has value as a 6/7. It makes more sense to use the 3rd slot on Manning then it does on MacDonald in my opinion. - MJL
There are tons of Brandon Mannings available for Vegas. It is a waste of space to protect either player. I am just saying it wouldn't shock me if the Flyers protected AMac. I don't expect them to though |

Wasn't it reported the Isles (before trade) wanted to sign him to a similar or higher cap contract? I wonder what Amac would have been offered had he hit free agency that summer. It makes me feel slightly better that other teams would have overpaid too. - arichardson22
I am fairly certain the Isles had a number in mind and would not go over that. The number in my head is 4, but I don't remember if that was years or AAV (I think AAV) He would've gotten a good amount of money in the summer, but I don't think that changes the mistake of acquiring him in the first place. |

Okay thanks, I just remember he turned an offer down from them. After Pronger, Homer reallly struck out on trades for dmen: Schenn, Kubina, Amac. Missing any other gems? |

This is what I do:
Giroux
Simmonds
Couturier
Schenn
Voracek
Filppula
Weal
Ghost
Radko
Manning (because there is really no one else)
Stolarz (because if Neuvirth is taken so be it)
I dont really care who gets taken among the rest of the players on this team. It will be one of Raffl, Read, or Laughton if I were a betting man.

I like Filppula. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much room for him at center. If he would play LW then I could see how he might stick with the team for a while.
Its funny. I really don't know what I want for next season. I am torn between getting rid of the bottom 6 players and bringing in young guys or keeping the team as it is and just bring along the young defenseman and maybe go after a high pick in next years draft... which is supposed to be good also.
But on the other hand there are a decent amount of UFAs and players that are available because of the expansion draft and I almost want to take advantage of this and restock the team now... Pick up Bishop for 2-3 years. Maybe Oshie can play LW or Marleau.
It really sucks I have 7 weeks to stew on this. |

Isles had offered him 4 years, 18 million. Not sure if he turned it down because he thought he could do better or that he thought he could get the same elsewhere and wanted out of Long Island and the dump that was the Isles old stadium.

Well, it's better than spending 7 weeks stewing over who to take with the 13th pick
and Filpulla can play LW, he's done it before. |

Manning as a 6/7 is fine and his cost is cheap.
I would in now way protect MacDonald. If in the off chance Vegas takes him that is a huge win for the Flyers. Moving that contract for nothing would be awesome. I wouldn't want to stop that from possibly happening.
hell we never thought we would make out in the draft lottery. Who's to say Vegas doesn't think of macdonald as a viable option. |

The team is actually in pretty good shape. There isnt one player on this roster or in Lehigh I would be really broken up about if they got taken.

I want to stay away from Oshie. Nothing against him as a player and he could def help us, but he's gonna want that term and high cap for his last big contract. Marleau intrigues me a little on the other hand. But I'd imagine he remains with San Jose or hops to contender on a 1 or 2 year deal. But, people seem to be ok with throwing a contract with 5-6M for bishop so if that doesn't happen, I wouldn't be opposed to the idea. But like I said, I doubt Marleau would have interest here.

Agree.
Only way it changes is if I acquire and upgrade over manning. some deal where I move a forward I can't protect for a defenseman I can. |

So there are two options for a team's protected list: eight skaters and a goalie or seven forwards, three defensemen and a goalie. Let's assume they'll protect Stolarz and we already know Claude Giroux is on the list because he has a no-move clause. If it's me, I do 7/3/1.
Here would be my list: Giroux, Voracek, Schenn, Couturier, Simmonds, Cousins, Gostisbehere, Gudas and Brennan. Why T.J. Brennan? Read Steve Whyno's story on what adding a 31st team does to the NHL. Brennan is such an on-the-cusp player that he benefits most from an extra team. He'd have a job in a 31-team NHL and doesn't in a 30-team NHL.
EDIT: As @dommer_abroad was kind enough to point out...I can't count so good and only listed six forwards. I would say No. 7 would be Taylor Leier. Tough call between him and Michael Raffl, but Leier has a bigger upside even though Raffl fills that 1LW role right now. |

It's puzzling why you don't think there is room for Filppula at center. I'd be very surprised if he wasn't centering the 3rd line on the opening game rostet. |

I think he moves if the flyers get Patrick. I think they would role Giroux, Couturier and Patrick down the middle.
I could Hischier starting on the wing if he goes at 2 though. |

If they can make a deal, go for it, but I doubt there is a decent deal to be made that would allow them to swap one of their unprotected forwards for a Dman who's any better than Manning.

The only way I don't see that is if they take Patrick and he has a fantastic camp. Even then, they would just slide Filpulla to LW. He's not going anywhere. |

I don't think he moves regardless of who we get until the TDL. Hexy, and roster players, all spoke very highly of Filp in exit interviews and how they look forward of his impact to start the season. And how the top9 improves. Now this was obviously before acquiring #2 overall; things change. But Hexy also has heavily emphasized how great it is having extra centers since they can adapt to the wing if needed. I just don't see Hexy rushing to trade Filp when injuries always happen and he will have more value at the deadline with salary retained arguably.
EDIT: and if we are in the playoff picture, I can see Hexy just holding onto him. |
