It starts and ends with Mathews

At this moment I probably wouldn't even trade them for Ema Matthews...

No, that was mid-season and it was 2 1sts plus

Unfortunately, I think that price might be a bit too high for the Leafs where they are at. I'm hoping Anaheim realize they actually need some semblance of an offense to ever progress in the playoffs and decide that a big soft winger with a Dutch sounding surname is what they require.

You cant take steps forward until the players you have are ready to do so. If you blow a couple drafts then you have to wait a coule years to keep adding. Trading away picks and prospects and tossing money at the team is doing nothing for long term success.
- mauryballstein

I honestly believe if everything happened exactly the same except the leafs had buffalo's injury problems and draft lotto luck and buffalo was healthy that they are a lot closer than you think

Sure, you have to drive almost 100 miles between them, though they're only about 60 miles apart...

So you give ROR the 8m 8year deal he was asking for the Avs....and wanting to be 1C and be named the captain. He pouted that he was never given a letter for the team, not even making that up.

What does that do to the team. Make MacKinnon a Winger or 2C. Burn up more cap space. Have to move More than just Duchene out to make the cap work.

Sorry but moving ROR was a needed move. He didn't want to be part of the Avs team, he wanted them to build around him. It sucks that they had to move him, but there was no logical way to keep him.

- DDM-Coga

Well he took 7.5. Scored 55 points on a poopty team. Soderberg, colbourne, girgs combined cost around 8.5 and had almost the same amount of points.
Duchene O'Reilly
Landeskog Mackinnon would have been a solid first 2 lines. Add in Ranty.

Buffalo and Toronto basically did the same thing ...one won the lotto and the other lost ...

Tanev will have to be moved before the 18-19 season so Glass can have his number 8. He cannot use 88 as that is reserved for Tryamkin's return the same season.
I am resigned to the fact that Edler is here for duration of his contract and it is probably not a good idea to get rid of both anyways. I like Tanev, but he sure would look good as a Sabre.

he wanted more from the Avs, you can google it if you want. His starting point was 8mx8yrs with the Avs and he wasn't budging.

Colborne came later (last year) so you have to look at the 2014-15 offseason with their cap situation. They were hooped bc of bad Beauchemin and Sturat moves.

With Needing space to MacKinnon, EJ, and Barrie extensions in the 2015-16 offseason. The math just didn't work out. You can rip on Sakic on for the return of the trade but there was no way he was staying with the Avs. So moving him wasn't t a mistake bc ROR was doing everything possible to be traded. He wouldnt sign a reasonable deal so it was trade him now or let him walk for free. Its not hard to see that.

And really the return is just hindsight now. Would you be happy if the Canucks traded 4 prime pieces (2 1st round prospects and 2 2nd round prospects) for ROR without an extension signed? There wasn't many teams who could do that move

Not sure if their shooting sides would work, but if we do indeed wish to grow O.J's offensive game or any other D-prospect, there's no better partner on this team (and perhaps on most teams) to do that then being paired with Tanev.

Tanev is also young enough and frankly, cheap enough, to be an integral member of our d-corps for another 6-7 years.

Moving him for a late first to draft a d-man that will likely never be as good as him in the first place does not seem like a very logical approach to building that 'winning culture' management is pushing.

He is a top-tier defensive center, which is exactly what they need behind mac. Duchene and Landeskog should have been out before ROR imo. Now they have Jost to hopefully take that role, if he was as much of a problem as you say then fair enough. Zadorov has time to turn it around

I'm 100% open to moving Tanev if a GM overpays, but otherwise I agree. Use him as a partner for young dmen and a guy who can teach the young dmen how to defend using positioning even if you're not the biggest/fastest guy. Juolevi/Stetcher/Hutton can all refine those parts of their game by improve their technique.

Trade Tanev down the line. Try to convince Edler to leave this summer or at the TDL if possible.

I agree. It was a little bit of tongue-in-cheek. Defenseman like Tanev are hard to come by. My preference would be to get rid of Edler though, but our defense is already bad & would be even harder too watch with either Tanev or Edler not on the team, regardless of their warts.l

So you would have paid him the 8x8 he wanted and given him the "C" then? Those were his demands.

Lotto luck has nothing to do with it. If you dont have the players you cant move forward, was my point.

Buffalo might have been closer to making the playoffs if not for the injuries but im talking about long term success. The leafs will be good for the next 10 years where as buffalo will be a fringe playoff team during that time unless they get really lucky. I just think the sabres jumped the gun by a couple years.

The leafs still have loads of prospects not on the team, where as buffalo has fewer.

So agree to disagree.
