Sorry, tell me again why Rob Blake would trade Drew Doughty? - PatC80
OK here are 4 reasons:
1) LA just cleaned house - Sutter - adious, Lombardi - adious.
2) Dustin Brown - 5 more years, scored 14 goals and 36 pts, age 32, $5.875M cap hit
3) Anze Kopitar - 7 more years, scored 12 goals and 52 pts, age 29, $10M cap hit
4) Marian Gaborik - 4 more years, scored 10 goals, 21 pts, age 35, $4.875M cap hit
As an added bonus their top scorer, has a decent enough contract, but is 32 years old.

Marian Gaborik and/or Brown will be exposed for the upcoming expansion draft.. So, cap problem is solved. Plus, with Gaborik being hurt, he can be on the LTIR |

The leafs will NOT trade a 19 year old 60 point rookie for a 30 year old on the decline.
End of story, time to move on. |

I have no idea why Vlasic or Doughty would be moved. San Jose and LA have to retool, not totally blow it up and start over.
Thornton and Marleau are probably out, clearing a bunch of cap space. I think Paul Martin is the guy that could be moved.
LA has put themselves in cap hell but trading Doughty wont fix it. They need to get rid of Brown and Gaborik contracts. Also could/should consider moving Carter if they are looking to re-tool a bit. |

Think I just read that the last time the Leafs won a playoff series was 03-04.

So a team with 3 bad contracts should trade their best player who also happens to be on a good contract????? |

You are dreaming in technicolor if you think that Vegas or anyone takes those contracts, even if LA agrees to include a first rounder. If a team has room on Robidas Island and the ability to pay for an expensive vacation, maybe one or both are moved. Very few teams would be willing to play that game. LA will be rebuilding, Doughty has 2 years before free agency, he is by far their best trading chip. They can solve several problems by moving Doughty. Kopitar with his ridiculous contract is going nowhere.

agreed. if they shake things up, carter is the guy who's out from the forward ranks. brown and gaborik can be moved, but at the cost of bad contracts coming back or giving up picks.
muzzin or martinez could also be moved.

LA is an old team, with several bad contracts. Very few teams can afford a $10 million a year player that puts up journeyman numbers like Kopitar did this season. All three contracts mentioned are probably among the worst 10 in the NHL for players that are not injured.

How many buy outs do LA have left? Brown has to be the first guy the Kings have to find a way to get rid of. Ever since his stupid wife was bragging to all the other hockey wives about having two rings and wanting a third because they have 3 kids while every other wife at the table had zero rings combined. I hope he gets bought out and leaves her to fend for herself. |

gm's tend to play a safe game. very few make high risk moves like you're talking about.

I think Carter would be easy to trade and possible get a decent return because he has a good contract. Problem is LA finished with 199 goals this year, good for 25th place and not too far from rock bottom. Would you trade your best goal scorer, if your biggest problem is scoring goals?

thing is, i can't think of a single gm that has ever this been proactive with a rebuild. it's always let's take one more kick at the can with the current core.
i'd be shocked if wilson starts a rebuild this year. he wants a cup and will take one more shot. - Tumbleweed
Admittedly, you're right about this.
I've seen some start shipping out vets for youth slowly. Maybe let Thornton and Marleau walk, and look to their youth.
But then maybe Vlasic says no to a new contract. |

their biggest problem last year was running with 2 backups for 2/3 of the year.
with quick in net, the team generates more offense than with other goalies.
doughty is young and irreplaceable. so yes, i think they move carter way before doughty. |

"You're going to trade us Rielly, Reimer, and your first (ended up Nylander) for Luongo, and you're going to like it, because you need a goalie. He's worth that, and we have 3 of the best 2 goalies in the NHL anyway" - Canucklehead fans, 2014
they barely ended up with a damn thing (certainly nothing as good as EITHER Rielly OR Nylander) for any of their goalies. |

i think they'll be an also-ran playoff team for another 2-3 years and slowly be forced into a rebuild.
and yup, seems like they'll be set-up where they can't get assets back for any of their vets. |

If that's the case, I sit tight and wait for Vlasic to hit UFA next year. I doubt he re-signs, and they're probably forced to trade him at the TDL. |

The Maple Leafs arent going to push the panic button and make HUGE splash for a top 2 D-Man...UNLESS, the Defencemen they brought in, was in his mid-twenties.
here is how i break it down, after this season....
1. Reilly (could also be a #2 guy)
2. _____
3. Gardiner
4. Zaitsev
5. ______
6. ______
7. Marincin
**Polak: FA. Babcock likes him. I can see them re-signing him *slides in#5 spot*
**Carrick will probably be sent to the Minors or traded away.
**Hunwick is a FA..so not sure if Leafs bring him back or not***
**Andrew Nielsen - Could Be NHL ready OR, could be packaged in a deal to bring in #2 D-Man.**
The #6 Spot can go to a Hunwick or a guy like Travis Dermott (if Ready, or A.Nielsen). Or they can bring in a veteran D-Man to fill in that spot.
I think you need to look at packaging some guys like JVR, Andrew Nielsen, and their #1st Round Pick in 2017, for a #2 or #2 D-Man. or Maybe even a guy like Kapanen could be part of a package deal..... But noooo way, do they move Nylander.

Yeah they're going to fire Doug Wilson, who has kept the team in the playoffs and competitive for 12 of the last 13 seasons. Doug Wilson is one of the best GMs in the league. - WaterVsAnchor
Yes he has had a competetive team for many years. Recently axed Lombardi won two cups since 2012. Wilson has won zero cups. Not so sure he is as safe as you think.
