I once read some story about a deal where the Oilers and the Leafs were basically going to trade their entire teams to each other. - TheTaoOfSemenko
Right, cause Ballard was going broke and wanted to sell the Oilers, he thought that trading franchises with the Leafs would make him some money. |

I think JVR for Muzzin is a very good deal straight-up. I would actually move JVR before I move Bozak. Your 1-2-3 punch down the middle is is very good, but if it came down it I'd move Bozak. You're not getting something for nothing, but you don't have to sell the future. - Rinosaur
Bozak is good for our 3rd line.
Matthews
Kadri
Bozak
Gauthier/Boyle
We havw a plethora of young talent on the wings where we can afford to trade JvR. We don't have the centre depth to trade Bozak. |

Rangers also have a win post-expansion. Actually, only 1 original six team hasn't won a Cup post expansion.
Good point, Rangers have won the fewest cups among the original six teams. In terms of post expansion team wins. Incredibly inept, dishonest and greedy management for the Leafs for many years was a significant factor. Moving into the 70's and 80's - not drafting first overall to scoop a pick like the Pens did to get Lemieux and Crosby and not having exceptional status for a player like Gretzky - who was not made available for the draft - certainly made a difference. Incidently, the Oilers did have four first overall picks in the past seven years, 3 were basically of not much consequence until they got a gift in McDavid. If I were to judge the most succesful teams post expansion it would be the NYI who drafted Bossy 15th overall and won four cups and the New Jersey Devils who did it with penny pinching ownership, marginal talent and a sensational goalie.

Ok, so I didn't read all these replies, so I'm sorry if I'm being repetitive. I pose this question: Do the Leafs need Vlasic? They definitely need to improve their defense, but I don't think they need someone like Vlasic.
IMO the Leafs need a Paul Martin or Adam Larsson type dman, not someone like Vlasic. They also should not have to move someone like Nylander. If they can move Kapanen, JVR or Bozak I think that would be a better route.
If they decide to get more offense-minded dman, then I'd look to LAK. They need offensive punch, so why not try and pry Martinez or Muzzin away? Those guys are playoff battle-tested and under reasonable contracts(not that Vlasic isn't), but I think those guys would require less of a return than Vlasic.
Leafs don't need to go balls-to-the-wall. Just balance out the back-end and they'll be in great position. Even someone like Del Zotto is underrated in how good they are defensively.
I'm just saying there are other options without having to sell the farm. - Rinosaur

we would probably have to dip into free agency if we dumped bozak.
Hanzal is an option. Bonino seems like a cheaper slightly younger version of bozak.

Sports really have this cool element of random chance.
Tom Brady almost didn't get drafted for instance. - TheTaoOfSemenko
and didnt he only get to be the starter because that other guy got injured? |

Yes, because no team has EVER started a rebuild and retained any players.
It has never happened. a Rebuild only happens once you apply the league for a rebuild permit (this has to be done by fax). Then there is a draft where the other teams get to pillage all (5 of) your decent players, and then you have to buy out all the rest and start with ZERO players.
Otherwise, it is not a real rebuild.
We can debate the time frames all we want but I think some Leafs fans look at the rebuild start as when the new regime arrived and the trades of Kessel, and Phaneuf and getting rid of the Clarkson contract.
Does it really matter anyway? - Aetherial
I would say you are in the second era of a rebuild. Wouldn't call it year 1. |

No, it was Ballard that was losing money. this was to happen after the Leafs traded away all their good players and before they drafted Clark.. Edmonton in the '80s were probably the most valuable team in the league

Muzzin would look great on the Leafs. Signed long-term to a reasonable contract and only 27.
Wonder what the Kings would want for him.
I assume the Kings need some wingers to play with Carter and.or Kopitar... What about JVR for Muzzin? Think other pieces will need to be added - PatC80
Muzzin ia good because of Doughty.
I would stay away

No, Leafs will trade their entire team for a pair of 59 year old softy forwards that have a combined salary of $14 million but whose names escape me right now. |
