Totally off subject and bound to be ridiculed by many but here goes.... Am I the only one who feels that the NHL as played today is about as boring as watching paint dry when compared to the way the NHL was played in the 70's and 80's?
- rapperray

You're not the only one who feels that way, but I think nostalgia plays a bigger part in that than it should.

I don't think I am being nostalgic here....... I would be interested to see the comparison of goals scored per game in the 70's and 80's and todays game

How about those Sabre Canadiens games of the past Homie? was there ever a game with less than 7 goals scored between those teams. And that is not the only example

1979-1980 season... 3.51 goals a game compared to 2.77 today.... That is significant

Homie... I have 2 stupid suggestions for the NHL... Make the goalie equipment much smaller and do something to eliminate the neutral zone trap

Goalies were also on average 5'10 and weighed 180 pounds. Not like these behemoths now.

Games are a lot faster now and less physical.

They are probably higher, but it's apples and oranges. The players today are bigger, faster, and stronger, and therefore the playing field is more even. Video and technology, coupled with players just being flat out bigger and stronger allow for the playing field to be leveled more than it did back then.

There were also fewer teams, so the talent is a lot more saturated than it was in that era where there was anywhere from only 16-24 teams (perhaps even less if you pick the correct era?).

Oh yeah, and I will add a third. The players union will put a damper on many of these rules.

the goalies today are much better than that era

the 15th best goalie now is a top 8 goalie then when they had fewer teams

I guess, but there were a lot penalties called that weren't penalties as well. The Sabres definitely benefited, but there was no way the "leave room for the Holy Spirit" standard was going to be maintained. It's still not nearly as bad as the dead puck era.

I am shocked the union has allowed 16 teams in the east and 14 teams in the west to go on as long as it has

Interesting... The NFL has expanded and yet the quality of play has not diminished significantly. The NHL expands and for some reason the talent level sinks significantly...Or at least the number of BIG NAME players has shrunk... How come?

my biggest problem is lack of consistency in calling penalties for the post season

clutch, grab, mug for 40 minutes

then call a ticky tack penalty with 8 minutes left in the game

I don't think it's changed one bit

If anything I think the cap brings down today's nhl more than the talent pool

6 to 8 superstars, like in other eras

20-40 really great players that could be hall of fame guys if they keep their foot on the pedal

Failed drug test, kicked out of combine and concussion issues. Seems like someone the new regime would steer clear of

This is not about individual positions... The scoring in the NFL has not tanked due to expansion like the NHL has....

Yeah, I don't buy that one either. A great quarterback dominates his sport more than any other sport. The center in basketball used to be #2 until Jordan and LeBron came into the game.
