Believe Travis Green is getting a 4-year deal from #canucks

Seems like a bit much...

what coach would want to take this job, given what has happened with the last 2 coaches. Unless they give a coach term, no one is going to come here, its a dumpster fire.

You can argue Stecher wasn't here long enough and Hutton had a so-so season but Tree 100% got better over the time he was here

You always give a coach an extra year on his contract than you actually want. This fits the bill for 3 years away from being 3 years away, the new coach will come around and take the assets acquired over the next 3 seasons and make that playoff push

Horvat Baertschi Granlund Hutton Stecher Tryamkin?

Name one thing Willie did, besides being forced due to injuries to play them, that actually contributed to the improvement of any of these players.

I think the original argument Don made was that Willie didn't develop anybody. Totally untrue when you look at those 3 forwards in particular. Regardless of his impact relative to Lidster, all 3 of those dmen got better. I can't agree that Hutton became a worse hockey player this year, going to have to see next season, sophomore slump and all that.

"Yeah but I knew Horvat being 4th line was a mistake, he was always going to be good. It took Willie way too long to give him 20+ minutes per night" - the Willie deniers

I'd argue he's the one guy whose ass you didn't need to light a fire under. Horvat also said he was embarrassed by his plus minus the previous season and had already worked hard to significantly improve his skating and skills over the summer.

Willie said he put him on the 4th line because he saw him as needing to become a better defensive player because that's where his future value to the team would be. Another example of mis-use of the talent on his roster. Which is always justified after the fact by claiming he was making them 'earn it'.

My point is simple that trading down is a huge gamble - and your example proves the point even further, as you can see how it has turned out for Detroit.

And I think we'd be nuts to do it, especially with an even higher pick.

- Brooks_Light

Its all situational for me. If we get the 1st pick and JB sees Vilardi as the best prospect and can drop to 3 as there is some certainty that they will get the guy they want(example). I think it might make more sense here if we get 5th and a team at 7 wants to move up and you feel a player you like perhaps glass will still be there.

Last year I wanted to trade down with say buffalo because I didnt care if we took tkachuk, oj or sergachev so in that case it would have worked because i had all 3 players ranked evenly and didnt care who we walked away with.

This year I want the best center we can get. If something happens where by JB has 3 centers ranked the same and can move back to get one plus pick up assets then do it. But if he has one really targeted then just pick him.

I think if they were thinking long term, they wouldve just kept Willie for one more year.

Realistically this year's 1st rounder isnt making the club and a case could be made that Dahlen, Boeser, Goldobin might not be on the squad next season (or at least be the benefit of not being there). Given the high praise for the potential top picks of next draft, the following season could have 2017 & 2018 top picks, and some of Dahlen, Boeser, Goldobin, Juolevi plus your usuals. A much better time to bring in a fresh voice and direction.

Oh well, whats done is done. The pressures of the market screaming for a new coach got to someone in the organization

- WhiteLie

I normally agree with your rational posting but......Willie was NOT an option. A) he was a brutal coach B) his deployment issues and hesitation towards fully commiting to the young players C) insubordination

yeah 15 years of playing in the league and 7 as a coach is useless - I doubt he understands the game. Interesting fact, I read that every coach that was ever hired into the NHL had NHL coaching experience beforehand - EXCEPT FOR GREEN!! weird eh?

trading down when we have a top 5 pick is insanely stupid. We are a rebuilding team that is desperate for high end talent. We don't need more DEPTH we need a potential star

he wouldn't have even played them if not from pressure from Benning. Willie loves his Magma's chaputs and veys

My comment was made as a comparison between Willie and Green at the AHL level. I suppose my post wasn't clear. Point being, Willie developed no one in the AHL.

Thats where I thought it would have been better to let as many kids as possible stay in Utica next season. Willie could play all the vets he wanted, take the team to another lottery pick and deploy anyone he wanted. Utica could then teach the kids, form chemistry and let them figure out powerplay success with the likes of Boeser, Goldobin, Dahlen, Virtanen, Subban on it.

Thats what I meant by focusing on the future, it would only have needed to be one season of obvious tanking
