Looking at some of the pre draft rankings, this draft is going to be all over the board
Here are some comparisons of the top centers:
Player name Button/Draftbuzz/Marek/ISS
Necas 3/6/8/17
Vilardi 4/3/5/4
Mittelstadt 6/10/6/6
Glass 7/8/16/14
Poehling 9/15/24/19
Suzuki 10/12/23/23
Pettersson 12/5//27/15
Andersson 15/7/12/27
Rasmussen 16/17/9/7
Now of the guys I really like, I think it's a safe bet that Vilardi won't fall past 5, but after that it wouldn't really shock me if at least 1 or maybe even 2, of Necas, Mittelstadt, Glass and Pettersson are still on the board after 9 picks have been made.
If so, I have to think it won't cost an arm and a leg to move up from 13 to 10 or 11 if there is a center that they really want to get still available. - BiggE
Or they just could've been at 10! |

Well, I ran the draft simulator. Only took 3 tries to get the Flyers the 3rd pick. Took 7 spins to get them the first pick.
What does this mean??

Yep, agreed.
My understanding of being a 200 ft player would mean that you either have an uncanny sense of timing and positional play ("good hockey sense") or that you are fast enough to make up for it when you are out of position. - johndewar

I think Konecny has it and in a different way Simmonds does too. We don't really know though with how little they've been in the playoffs - YuenglingJagr
Giroux had it before the last calendar year. I think guys like Briere and Jagr had a huge part in his development to super star status. It's not really feasible with the current direction of the team but he could use a few more quality veterans in his corner. Streit, Bellemare and Schultz weren't really suitable replacements to Timonen, Briere and Pronger. The leadership has struggled in recent years and the responsibilities are going to get heavier for the group going forward.

Yeah, well, his one good regular season and 2 soft goals against TO in the 99 playoffs just weren't quite enough to get on the list.
Rumor has it that he may be on Chris Jericho's list however.

True, and it certainly wasn't on him that his teammates couldn't score. However, 2 of the goals he gave up were unscreened short side softies and those just can't happen.

Agree 100%
Mason, for his career in Philly, was one of the better goalies to play here, especially during the last 20 years. In fact, I'd rate him only behind Cechmanek if I was ranking Flyers goalies of the last 20 years.
Hmm....
Ok, here are my top ten Flyers goalies of the last 20 years:
(of course none of these guys belong in the same conversation as Parent, Lindbergh and the 80s version of Ron Hextall!)
Honorable mentions:
Beezer and Neuvy
10. Bryzgalov
Hell, he deserves to be on the list just for his interviews. Perfect example of a guy who put up great numbers because he played behind a great D system. His numbers were solid for the most part in Philly and, at times, he was spectacular, but in the end, his signing will go down as a major screw up.
9. Ray Emery
A true warrior, who will ever forget him pounding on a terrified Holtby, LOL! It's a shame he couldn't have stayed healthy in 09-10. A 100% Emery could have very well led us to a Cup.
8. Michael Leighton
Had one hell of a run in the 2010 playoffs, at least until game 6.
7. Antero Nittymaki
Nitty was another guy hampered by injuries. His dominance of the Thrashers though was just freakish.
6. Bobrovsky
He showed a ton of promise, but Lavi bailing on him and then Snider demanding a free agent signing pretty much ended his time here. Yeah, they (frank)ed up with Bob, but it's water under the bridge now, so move on.
5. Robert Esche
"Silent Bob" was just a flat out horse for the Flyers in the 03-04 playoffs as he and Keith Primeau basically kept the injury depleted team afloat for 3 rounds. If they had just had one more healthy Dman.....
4. Brian Boucher
Boucher had an amazing start to his career in 99-00 and looked like the next great Flyers goalie. However he had a tough sophomore slump in 00-01 and lost his starting job to Cechmanek that season. Immaturity was his downfall during his first stint in orange and black, but when he returned years later, he was always a class act and veteran leader. And, of course, who can ever forget him out dueling CSP in the shootout in 2010 and the great work he did in the playoffs that year.
3. Marty Biron
Biron came aboard during the season from hell, and provided badly needed stability in goal. He was fantastic for much of the 07-08 season and playoffs and was always a class act. He wasn't the most talented goalie on this list, but he provided the Flyers with solid goaltending night in and night out at a time when they very badly needed it.
2. Steve Mason
Mase gets a bad rap from a lot of folks around here, but if you look at his numbers since coming to Philly he has really done a fantastic job while spending much of his time playing behind an average to mediocre group of Dmen. I hope the guy they end up replacing him with can do as well.
1. Roman Cechmanek
Cecho was a bit nutty to say the least, I mean the guy actively looked to stop shots with his freaking head!! However, when you look at the numbers, he is by far, the best goalie on this list. The Flyers had all kinds of problems from 2000-2002, but the quality of Cechmanek's play wasn't one of them. Sadly, his tendency to throw his teammates under the bus was.
Well, that's it. Let the criticism and complaints begin!
- BiggE
I'd move Biron down a bit and Emery up a bit. There is no doubt in my mind that with a healthy Emery in 09-10 they win the cup. His .905 and 2.64 are thrown off by some of his games over the last 2 months that he got lit up that when I'm sure he was having a lot of discomfort while his hip necrosis was still un-diagnosed. He would have gotten the job done in the playoff run, especially looking at Niemi's save percentage in the final:
Game 1: .844 W
Game 2: .970 W
Game 3: .875 L
Game 4: .867 L
Game 5: .852 W
Game 6: .875 W
I can't see Niemi's Game 1 and Game 5 wins holding up if Emery was in net instead of Leighton.

Especially Game 1. 5 goals, 8 PP's, 0 PK's on the road and they lost. Stupid Roy Halladay stole all the mojo that day.
