On a team this bad his number of wins are meaningless. The more important measure of his success was his save percentage, which was in the top 10 in the league.

His "injury issues" are a myth. He had one horrible concussion that led him to come back prematurely and triggered another injury. Once he got healthy from that, he has appeared at the same rate of starts as any other #1 in the league.

Here's kind of an interesting stat...

Andersen played in 7 more games (66 to Lehner's 59) and had 10 more wins than Lehner did (33 to Lehner's 23). So basically, he won 3 more games than Lehner did in the same amount of starts. But our goalie is an issue. Let's also now point out that Lehner had a better sv% and both goalies had pretty much an identical GAA (2.68 for Lehner and 2.67 for Andersen).

To take it even one step further, Andersen appeared in 8 shootouts and won 1 of them. Lehner appeared in 4 and lost all of them.

But goalie is an issue for the Sabres....

That's all you took from that?

Lehner was ok this season, but 23W in 58 starts? And this being his first half decent season. The guy also has injury issues. Exactly much are you prepared to commit to this guy right now given that he is RFA?

He's also a (frank)ing hot head who can be EASILY thrown off his game, not what you want from a tender.
EDIT: Forget about the game-to-game during the regular season, just imagine Lehner's crease getting crashed every shift in a playoff series.

As a Leafs fan, I'm actually hoping that Buffalo commits to this guy long term!

You guys got a great warrior in Andersen always loved him with the Ducks ..

He's been absolutely studalicious in playoffs keeping your team in the game until they take it into their own hands

I just posted something that compares Lehner's season to Andersen's. Pretty intriguing stuff. If you feel that Lehner is a problem, then it appears that you should feel the same way about your own goalie.

Just some food for thought.

I like Lehner but I won't be too upset if we move on as long as the need is addressed first. His mechanics aren't great. He's gotten decent results the last 2 years, I just wonder if he's solid enough and can work on the rebound control enough to be the goalie we want when we're not just happy competing for the playoffs. If he can work on the rebound control, going down early, and diving forward rather than sitting tall in the net then I'll be happy.

Are there aspects of Lehner's game that could be improved upon? Yes. But overall, he's not the problem here at all. As a matter of fact, I loved how he basically called most of the team out for the last month or so of the season. He hates to lose and expects that his teammates bring their A game every night. I like having a guy like that in the locker room.

there are 4 or 5 superior goalies

then another 15 or so lumped together

lehner is in that lump of 15

not bad, not special
most of all, not an issue on most nights

I think you see a lot of the "issues" you're pointing out resolved when the D is upgraded. A lot of his "all over the place" play has more to due with having 0 faith in the defense in front of him most nights. On the nights the team really played well as a full unit, his play was much less erratic and much more calculated.

if they sign petersen, think ullmark is ready and gets a decent return

I am ok moving lehner

but it needs to be a decent return

right now there are 2 or 3 untouchables on this roster

every other person should be explored in the trade market for the right return

I'm totally ok with this so long as the price suits the play as well. That's the part that makes me a bit nervous.

That I think is a confidence thing more than anything. Overall, we were terrible in shootouts from beginning to end. Couldn't score, couldn't keep it out of our net. I think if we had been better from a shooting standpoint, you'd probably have seen Lehner make a few saves because there would have been less pressure on him.

Have you seen the Leafs D lately and what Andersen has done behind that group? Not to mention a forward group that's been half+ full rookies all season.

You're right though, D does matter, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Andersen can do with a competent group in front of him on a nightly bases. Could be very scary.
