If OJ is ready at Camp then he's ready. That's why they have the exhibition games too.

I don't have a crystal ball like some seem to with their predictions, or preset notions, on what's best for a player 6 months from now.

But I'm all for seeing where these kids are at and do what's best for their development. If the NHL then that shouldn't be withheld. Though, I suspect there are strong desires by some not to improve the team next season.

There will be a lot change either way. If JB signs a bunch of vet free agents to short term contracts then we know the decision on the kids. If not, then there are spots to earn.

You can start him in the NHL see if he fits in . You can send him down if he doesn't fit. I don't care about burning a year of ECL we will have plenty of cap space

Yes.
My thinking as well.
Same with JV.

The key is to approach every kid/prospect who is on an ELC, that rather expecting them to be on the team, that they need to DESERVE to be on the team. Juolevi shouldn't be a lock, but should get a good look, same with Boeser, Virtanen, Goldobin, etc etc. Reward players who deserve it, not because it will appeal to the uneducated Canucks fan who knows nothing about anything, or than what they listen to on 1040. If a kid deserves it, play them, if they don't, send them down.

Juolevi will definitely need a big summer to make it worth keeping him around IMO.

Of those 3 players mentioned in the blog that made quick jumps to NHL, 2 had at least a season of NCAA before making the jump and Provorov was by all accounts very mature physically.

To me, if OJ can solidify a spot in the top 6 and those who play with him are not negatively affected by it, then keep him around. But if he is borderline - like JV and McCann's first season, then dont waste a season giving him spotty icetime

It's a fine line when you have a terrible team though. Juolevi, Goblin and Boeser are clearly better than some of the roster players. It's not hard to "earn it" when the roster has Megnas and Chapus and larsens

Yes, the Canucks probably had to part ways with Bieksa as a key step in the rebuild-that's-not-a-rebuild, but Vancouver sure could have used his heart, grit and competitiveness over the past two seasons.

Bieksa was terrible defensively his final two seasons as a Canuck. As bad if not worse than Edler was these last few months.

But yes, if you could find a way to transplant his heart, grit and competitiveness into Nikita Tryamkin, you'd really have something there. And if you could do the same with Dorsett and Virtanen, the team's fortunes change considerably.

JB is on the record saying he wants/expects 10 Dmen for the club next year.
i suspect OJ will get his chance, it's up to him to stay healthy to secure his spot (similar to Stetcher).

We all felt that it was time for Bieksa to move on, despite his heart.

I think Carol's point was more that leadership and veteran presence can go a long way to mentor the youth (like he's doing in Ana).
I think this is why it would be folly to jetison every vet (Sedins, Edler, etc) and expect the team to have any traction.

A good balance is key.

Then move the farm team to Vancouver so we can see the talent. No one wants to pay 150 to go see this sorry lot.

We are teetering on EDM Oilers of the past 10 years territory if we choose to player former 1st rounds picks too early. Look at what rushing kids/prospects into the league has done to them. I would sooner see us dress a poopty roster, let kids develop, and have a poopty NHL team for a few more years than to rush them and be mediocre for the next 10

the key is to not go then. What do all the top teams in the NHL have in common? Generally a few players who were chosen in the top 3 overall in their respective drafts. How did those teams get those players? Well the majority were pretty poopty the season prior to drafting those players, unless they won them in the lottery. Canucks have had a few REALLY bad years, but it hasn't been this super longwinded road of being god awful. Patience is pretty important when it comes to this stuff.

Are teams allowed to make deals with Vegas regarding expansion picks. For example can we trade a draft pick to Vegas in return for taking a specific player from our roster? Or is that a behind the scenes handshake wink wink kind of deal?

Whether or not a prospect is ready for the NHL should be based SOLELY on the current state of their skillset... Even if they're obviously more talented than half the roster of a sh!tty team, it'd be doing them a disservice to promote them before their skillset has been optimized vs lesser competition. IMO Boeser & Goldobin are NHL ready... OJ isn't, but who knows, that may change by training camp.

I haven't enjoyed their style fo many many years. I wishe we were faster and harder to play against. I really don't like the cycle game

Ease Juolevi in, will probably know by the end of the Young Stars if he has a chance.
- VanHockeyGuy

See what kind of strength he adds over the summer. Play him lots in the pre-season, and let him get his 9 NHL games in to see how he holds up against NHL competition. If he's not better than any of the guys they already have, spread his 9 NHL games out over a couple of months and send him back to London in time for World Juniors.

To me, Stecher earned his spot. Biega/waivers affected the numbers game but it was pretty obvious when he got 20+ minutes in his first game what everyone thought of him. If Juolevi looks like he can easily 16+ minutes a night then I keep him around.

Otherwise there are plenty of D in the system and journeymen you can bring in to get you to 10 D
