I don't watch Washington games not involving the Leafs, so I don't really know much about Alzner, but looking at his stats, he was 4th in TOI/G for Washington defencemen.

1st in SHTOI/G.

So he really doesn't strike me as "the man."

Well, he is in my opinion. He's basically the number one shutdown guy, with the least zone starts in the Ozone, most in the Dzone, most PK time, basically the defensive staple on arguably the top defensive team in the league.

Hopefully he recovers enough to have another contract next year but it's far from being a guarantee.

i'd take a look at nate schmidt for an offer sheet, say ~$2.5M.

i'm less certain about trading for a dman. carrick may warrant protection in the draft.

alzner at $4M is ok for me, at 5 years. more than $5M and I pass.
