It's sad that the Pens refused to spend top draft picks on defensemen.
What, they did draft dmen?
Where are these dmen?
/sarcasm - szielinski
Agreed. Look at how much better Shattenkirk is than the two scrubs we got and he didn't cost that much more. Presuming the Pens and Washington meet in the next round, I think this could easily become the difference of who wins the series. |

Not sure he was talking about the trade deadline, but considering JR knew there may be a chance Tanger wasn't going to play, it does seem strange he didn't go for a higher level Dman. In saying that, he is either comfortable with what we have or he just couldn't get a guy like Shatts. If the Blues actually asked Shatts where he wanted to go & the price was the same Shatts may have said "(frank) you Pens" & asked to go to the Caps where he may continue his career. |

I honestly didn't think you guys could sustain this caliber of play without Letang, and to be honest the Caps are going to have a very hard time stopping your speed game and relentless pressure. They've looked very beatable against the Leafs, give up their fair share of chances. You guys should be able to win a high scoring series regardless of who has Shattenkirk by just playing your style. |

Maybe I'm just being cautious, but while the Jackets are a very good and tough team, they play a completely different style than the Caps or even the Leafs; my concern is going up against fast attacking team like them will expose the void left by Letang's injury. |

Yeah, my mistake, he was talking draft and I was thinking TDL.
From everything I've heard, Shatts is planning to sign with NYR in the off-season - it's where he wants to play. So maybe Shatts (apparently a Rangers fan) did tell the Pens to f off.
From what I have seen of him, he's not far from Letang's level. I also wonder why he wanted out of St. Louis and why they weren't able to get much for him, even if he is just a rental. Maybe they couldn't get an extension done, maybe he didn't want an extension/he told them he was going to sign with NYR, so they got what they could for him now. But it is strange that St. Louis, who has Cup aspirations this year, to give up a top 4 or top pairing defenseman.
Doesn't it make you wonder what does happen behind the scenes? I wish a Pens GM would keep copious notes during his tenure and then write a tell-all book. |

Isn't that what EK does, just without the GM part or the 'actualities'? Yes I'd love to read some of the happenings if only for a season. Bettman should approve a book!
It does look like Shatts held the Blues to ransom to an extent. The Rags were never giving up anything substantial this season & its out that Shatts wants east coast. Not a lot of room to move there! In saying that, the Blues trading him might be an indicator he's not that good????
As I said above, it's strange JR didn't do a little better shopping knowing the risk with Tanger, or he's happy & thinks we can win without selling the his children. |

Have to think the next game is going to go out with a fracking Big Bang!!
If the Blowjobs are losing they're going to hit to injure, if they are winning they are going to hit to injure. All in all, they are going to hit to injure next game. Let's hope our Pens can stay safe & avoid injuries. |

The Blues liked Bouwmeester better, which I don't get. I guess they needed a stay-at-home defenseman to pair with Pietrangelo and they are pretty high on Parayko and Edmundson (with good reason), so Shatts was the odd-man-out. But did Shatts even have a NTC or a MNTC?
Yeah, I don't know the logic, but JR addressed a thin blue line (remember that Daley and Maatta were out at the time, too) with a bottom-pairing guy who is good on the PK, a marginal NHL player, and an AHL player. Sure, there wasn't a lot out there, but I think it might come back to bite them. I think Sully and the offense can only do so much. Throw in an injury to Murray and things look dicey despite being up 3-0 in the first round. |

One of the best things to come out of this game was Dubinsky HERO then does something stupid GOAT then HERO again and almost SUPER HERO but no, he has a front row seat to watch the winning goal go into the back of his net, then hands on knees, drops his head in exasperation, frustration, and disappointment. Poor Duby. |

I think maybe you answered your own question. The Pens were down 3 or maybe 4 Dmen. Do they get into a bidding war to make the big TDL splash which has never worked in the past or try to add depth with experienced Dmen? Like you said, Streit can be effective on the PP if need be and I for one have been pleasantly surprised with the play of Hainsey. Solid pickup imo. I have a feeling we'll find out in this round and/or next whether Shattenkirk was worth it or not for the Caps.

Would love to see the Pens end this Tuesday, get a healthy Hags back for the next series. I think you have to sit Rowney at this point. |
