Some interesting stats through 3 games I heard on the radio on my way into work today.

In the series, with all the shots/shot attempts the Wild have had, only 6 shot attempts have been off of rebounds.

Also, Wild have had 6 shot attempts on odd man rushes. Through 3 games. Wow!

That is a recipe for success.

Hasn't it always been that way in the NHL? Stars get away with murder and the retaliator gets hosed?

Loving the Leafs! Good coaching, talent, and a positive attitude are carrying them right now.

All of a sudden, Shattenkirk can't hit the net...

- eggsegan
He'll never be a number 1 defenseman. Anyone who pays him big dollars is fooling themselves
.

I loved watching him chase behind the net on the third Leafs goal to push, not hit, push the Leafs player that was already engaged with Orpik. Then the guy left alone in front scores after putting in his own rebound. He had time for 2 attempts while Shatty was running around not playing defense.

Which would you rather have:

WSH loses in the first round and the 1st rounder this year that we acquired from them is earlier than expected

OR

WSH advances to the ECF and the 1st rounder is later but we also get their 2019 second.

Door number 2.

If there's someone they want in between those two first round spots, an extra pick could help you trade up possibly. Otherwise you have two picks versus one.

That's true, good point about trading up. You could probably easily trade up from 28 to 22. I still wouldn't mind seeing them get bounced in the first round.

Yeah seeing him chase around the D zone brings back memories, doesn't it? I have to think that the Leafs brass is pleased with their decision not to bite on Shatty at the deadline.

I couldn't find anyone doing the "what if" scenarios for NHL point systems. I appreciate them so I broke out a spreadsheet.

In the table, the 2pt system is 2 points for a regulation win, 1 point for a tie at the end of regulation. I think it gives a better idea of how good a team really is when you remove the 3v3/shootout bonus points.

The 3pt system is 3 for a reg win, 2 for OT/SO win, 1 for OT/SO loss.

The table is sorted by 2pt system. I didn't sort the tie breakers, so they are random in the table, but let's say Reg. wins is the first.

The Atlantic coming in with 1 point separating the top 4!

There are no changes to who actually made the playoffs but some drastic changes to seeding (2pt).

In the West
(1W) Minnesota vs (8W) Calgary
(2W) Anaheim vs (7W) Nashville
(2C) Chicago vs (3C) St. Louis
(2P) Edmonton vs (3P) San Jose

In the East
(1E) Washington vs (8E) Toronto
(2E) Boston vs (7E) NYR
(2A) Montreal vs (3A) Ottawa
(2M) Pittsburgh vs (3M) Columbus

Edit: I took the reg/OT/SO win totals from a random site, so there's a chance the Clamtron9000 has some issues.

What is the earliest first we can get from them? If they lose to the Leafs, does that have them picking 22nd? If it were closer to 15th overall, I'd go that way but I think I'd rather have a 28-30th plus a 59-61st over just a 22nd.

I don't pay much attention to draft classes though, maybe someone else knows of a gem that will be around at 22.

What it tells me is, the gap between the best teams and the worst playoff teams is marginal. Match ups matter a lot because of that.
- carcus

This is true. it is also why the math bears out that a few fickle things like blown calls, a lucky bounce a change in momentum are the most important.

Most important is the narrative the players buy into. Because the difference in the talent are not that much. So if a player believes he is good maybe he gets that half step or finds that added bit of strength that gets him over the top. it also the reason why young players tend to go two ways in the play offs. if they don't realize what they aren't supposed to do they get better and do so for their careers(young players only). Or they let the pressure get to them and have to find a way to get past those mental hurdles in the proceeding years. Allen is the latter here.

Depending on how you draft and why you are drafting you can find gems anywhere in the first round.

The Blues can pick for longer term development. That bodes well for later first round picks. If you draft for immediacy then you are swinging hard and hoping to make contact.
