First round for sure...sometimes you should draft for position in later rounds

Cale Makar scouting report: - Nucker101
He needs to play in a better league to gauge him properly. |

Heard hes a floater but with crazy skill. Hes more of small skill guy trapped in a giant body. Has huge upside. If we get him in the second Id be happy even though he isnt a power type.
From what ive read the draft isnt as bad as people say. MOst guys will take a while to make it is all and there is no home run first overall.
There is lots of guys in the early 2nd I like. Even Hague seems to be dropping like a stone and could be there due to his skating. To me he is another guy worth the gamble. - mauryballstein
I'd like him too...lot of upside on the kid given his size and skill. The draft is decent. People are just down on it as it lacks star power and a consensus top 5. Still lots of talented kids |

To me it depends how closely the players are ranked. Im not taking a guy 30 spots higher than normal cus hes gona drop the gloves once in a while. But if you dont draft for need once in a while you end up like the oil for years. |

Exactly
Im almost more in to the 2nd round this year due to we havent had a pick there in how many years???? Also, so many different ways JB could go.
In the top 5 were either getting a center or a RHD. |

I'd be willing to put a sizable bet that JB picks a center if you're interested

The top five rated players are all centers so that's a pretty good bet for you |

Down because when you're drafting in the top 5 you hope to get a player that can change around a franchise. When you can draft a Zack Werenski at 8. W. Nylander or Ehlers at 8-9. Larkin at 15. Bo Horvat at 9. Then you know you have a strong draft. |

I actually think it's an okay draft depth-wise...not super deep but not as bad as some people will have you believe, but I do agree that the top 3 is weak compared to most years. Doesn't mean that there won't be any 1st liners or top pairing dmen in this draft. |

His defense was what worried me so this was a great read. - mauryballstein
I can recall very few kids that come out of Junior A that make anything of themselves in the NHL, it's just such a huge step to even Major Junior from there.
When I played in the mid 80's there was this guy named Bill McDougall who was just incredible, he probably still holds league records in the SJHL today, it was like how could he not make the NHL. And he did, but I think he played 10 or 20 games.
But then again Brind'amour and Curtis Joseph both had good careers, that's two guys out of 1000's of kids. |

Stelio MAttheos just scored a beauty goal.
I've been calling it weak for a long time. I am softening my stance a bit. You do lack the generational player or a game changer. Hischier and Patrick to me you're drafting a player some similar talent to Bo. Never have any idea how the players will turn out.
Jaret Anderson Dolan with a wicked shot block that lead straight to a goal. Reason why he is captain.
I guess the best way to explain this draft is to look at the 2012 draft, There are some good players but not a lot of stand outs on their teams. |

Both Patrick and Nico have a much higher ceiling than Bo. Patrick had over 100 points in his D-1 season. Horvat barely exceeded PPG in his draft year |

I think things are changing now. more kids opting for college these days it seems.. look to last year with jost and fabro both have huge upside. but then look at the kid the wings drafted in the first and thats were your arguement comes in to play. |

I can somewhat agree with that. Although I think Patrick and Nico are smarter than Yakupov so I think the top 2 is safer. Guarantee you that Canucks fans woulda been screaming for Griffin Reinhart in that draft
That draft was pathetic after the top 20 or so though, hopefully this one has a better 2nd round for the Canucks sake. |

I can understand the reluctance to draft a kid out of a league like that, especially with a top 10 pick. But he's basically Erik Karlsson with more grit in that league, so I think he'd fit in just fine in the NCAA, and still be a stand out.
It's gonna be a ballsy pick for whoever makes it, but in a draft like this I think it's worth it to make a pick like that(Necas/Makar/Mittelstadt) since this isn't a strong CHL class at all. |
