I'm trying not to lose my shit over this, but it's not easy. (Over the situation, not your post).

This tells you all you need to see about who will be the GM next year. I'll give Weight the benefit of the doubt with the PP because they weren't making major systematic changes in the middle of clawing their way back to the playoffs. So if he gets it tweaked in the offseason/camp then great. If not, this was a terrible hire.

But it's really feeling like this is the same circus with a new ringleader.

i agree chief. Weight needs major changes to the D system. Not minor ones and he needs a brand new staff of coaches. Weight and Garth returning is just brutal with Lombardi out there.

I'll start to feel better if the rest of the coaching staff is replaced, but I have less than zero faith in that happening.

I see one coach being replaced at the most. I find it very interesting we get that tweet about possible building news today. Maybe Ledecky wants to try to calm down the masses?

It tells me that Tavares is staying. There's a direction for a new building. The coach he loves is permanent. It all-but-definitely means Snow is sticking around.

Seems an awful lot like the inmates running the asylum though. Seems like they're more interested in giving guys a coach they like than anything else.

I'm ok (not in love) with Weight as the coach. As long as they bring in someone to fix the damn power play.
- Mancalledsting

Ya who knows? Maybe they talked to j.t. or the other player's, got their opinions? He might turn into the next Al Arbour (I know that they'll only be one Al) lol ,but imho they have to get this right on the direction of this team,j.t.s contract is coming up! And theirs no doubt! Not one !that John wants to win and stay with the islanders, but the key word is win and with a 8 year deal he'll want to see a vision in place

Great column Noel.

My take:
answer is 49
Number of man games missed by 2 of top 3 d men or number of times top two d pairs were not playing and replaced by bottom 3 guys

Answer is 26
Number of games started by signed number one goalie or most of the season team had a goaltender who never carried a 50 plus start season with an AHL backup.

Answer is: The forwards
Two solid vets, two hardworking rookies, two UFA's who eventually performed, plus a group of underperforming low battle prima donna cookie cutters and banged up fourth liners.

This is exactly it chief. This is everything JT wants. No wonder he does not want to leave. He going to get big money and have everyone he wants in place with no pressure.

If he becomes another Al Arbour, the Leafs will sign him to a 50 million dollar contract.

24-12-4, Final 6 wins without your best player, great communication with players who obviously responded, the only mistake with Weight was not giving him the reins earlier. Snow may stay, but Weight can do the job, who were we getting, Ruff? Hitchcock? A full season with Weight who now will have more of a voice on personal decisions, this team simply did not deserve the playoffs, not when you bury yourself that early, so I look forward to next year, get JT signed, get the hell out of that junkyard of an arena, and Lets Go Islanders!
- Sec111

You have a star to re-sign and he loves Weight as the coach. like you said, 24-12-4 to end the year, the last six without the superstar. Bringing Weight back is kind of a no-brainer for me.

I get it, and I agree. Snow should be gone. But we know he won't be. However, in an attempt to be an optimist and look at the glass half-full, we have a situation where the owners know that they need to re-sign their star and do it this summer. They know that the star loves Weight as coach. We also know that the owners have been trying to find a Team President to hire above Snow to change the direction of things. They recognize the shortcomings of Snow. There's still time to bring in an executive above Snow for Snow to report in to and help Snow do his job better.

I just cannot wait to see what executive takes this job with the GM and coach in place.

There is no doubt that Ledecky and Malkin have been talking to JT or at least Brisson for weeks and I'm sure that if JT wanted to have Doug Weight remain as coach, that was relayed to the ownership before this announcement was made. Its critical that they create an environment (or at least maintain one) that JT wants to return to long-term. Given what Weight accomplished once he was promoted, I really don't see the down side to naming him coach, especially if JT voiced to ownership that he would like for that to happen.

You never know. Its not the same job it was six years ago. You have, in my opinion, more credible owners, a lot of chatter about a brand new building at the Belmont racetrack site (I know, its chatter, it has to become reality, but I remain hopeful), you have a New York market, and a legit superstar in JT (presuming he re-signs long-term, something the new executive can help make happen). Snow and Weight are employees, employees that can be removed if necessary. Its the other things listed above that can't be changed very easily that are the selling points to a potential executive. To me, this franchise is not undesirable.

I'm all about bringing in Duchene or Tyler Johnson, although we differ on the belief of where they should play (I'd like them to be a 2C that could spread out the talent). I get the faith thing from your point of view, but we've watched this team think it knows better than everyone else for years and it's frustrating to see that trend continue. We've had "great young talent" for years now and it hasn't yielded squat so, until proven otherwise, I will assume that trend will continue.
