I've been preaching this strategy since the day Benning/Linden were hired, it killed me inside when I saw Toronto of all teams doing it.
- Nucker101

Toronto, Carolina, Buffalo, Florida like 3 years ago, the Coyotes and Devils tried this year and last.

Carolina's entire young core was basically born out of this strategy.

Yeah Carolina has done a nice job of it, not just flipping UFA's but using cap space to bend a team over in a trade.

It's why I wanted to smash my head into the wall when people here were debating that cap space didn't matter during a rebuild. I won't name names, but those were some good times.

There are only 31 people in the world that have the position of GM in the NHL and ours is Forest Gump.

There would be some irony in Benning/Linden selling Bo Horvat as the leader of the next group and with Green as the new coach to turn things around. Both Gillis moves.

Similar to how Gillis built around a Burke/Nonis core and Nonis' coaching hire.

Weird how that works out.

- Nucker101

Some local twat was on the radio a few months ago defending the collection of youngsters that Lindenning put together. Talked about Horvat and Hutton specifically as great young players that Lindenning have added to the club.

My pick for coach is Gallant, bit experienced and succeeded with a similar lineup mix. What other options are people thinkong ?

I remember someone around here last year saying that picking 5th was okay because Mathews wouldn't be a 50 pt player and basically just another, at best, Eichel so who cares.

Gallant has too much going for him to hitch his wagon to the state of this club.

No veteran coach is going to look at the Canucks and go "yeah" unless Francesco wants to pay them like Babcock

It sucks, but we're basically the Oilers pre-McDavid right now. Before you get a real coach like McLellan you're gonna suffer through an Eakins, Krueger, Nelson, Renney or two.

This is why the 1040 polls are useless, the guys voting would make Mike Milbury look like a good GM.

Sad, but true. Another reason why my money's on Green. Especially after being passed up for the Flames gig, you just know he's probably willing to get a shot anywhere at this point.

Like coming to America on the Titantic in 1912 and surviving only to go back to England on the Lusitania in 1915.

Yeah, losing out on Calgary and Anaheim last year is pretty surprising. Not even catching an assistant gig attractive enough that he could run his own bench after.

Plus, any vet coach would probably double down on the conservative style. Playing 2-1 games hoping to finish 7th last so they can say "look how good i did with such a bad team" after being fired

Best bet is a young coach who has a bit less ego and can learn with the team as the team grows.

If he sucks, then its another two years of bottom finishes, selling at the trade deadline and stockpiling assets, at which point maybe a real coach looks at your team and sees enough to work with.

I wonder if Bednar hangs around in Colorado. Might be best for him to go back to the AHL for a year or two after this debacle, and reviews were pretty good on his AHL work. Could use a good development coach in Utica for the next 2 years

He's not my top choice, but I'm not against hiring him.

He's not WD 2.0

But this gig is really a suicide quest for any coach. Good luck surviving the rebuild.

No coach is getting quick results from this group next year.
- VanHockeyGuy

I disagree. Its a wait n see time. Nothing more & nothing less.
Thats why they play the games.

Could be the gateway to a profile assistant gig after, and then running your own bench after two years of that.

Not the worst plan if you play your cards right, especially if the team is bad but you can make something of the special teams after the disaster they were before

I think you will get a vet coach. New coaches with young teams tend to turn out more like the Oilers of the past 10 years.

I joke about DS but he took a very mediocre hockey team to the Stanley Cup finals (I would say we won ) with hard work and good goaltending.

Sutter definitely has a shelf life, but he has managed to get the best out of the last 2 teams he coached.

If the PK and PP can reach levels of non-embarassment a 6th last finish isn't out of the question

As for any real jump up the standings, its hard to see who they can leapfrog without a big influx of talent.

Ideally a Dman who can score a few points. Whether Hutton or Stecher is that, Subban works magic as a Marc Andre Bergeron type 6th dman is yet to be seen.

Caught a few games when I visited family this year.

"Stecher was a great part of the Gudbranson trade"

I actually turned around and looked at the guy. he was really trying to impress these girls, who wanted nothing to do with him, with his hockey knowledge
