I see Bill amended the blog since Vecchione will apparently be at the Hobey Baker ceremony on Sat. and won't be playing then. I don't see why he wasnt going to be in the lineup anyway... I mean whats the worst that could happen? The Flyers could be eliminated from the playoffs?

Of course... now I have to take into consideration that perhaps the members of Team Negative, in their infinite wisdom, will determine that Vecchione is another misguided college signing and a waste of a roster space that prevents Hextall from signing someone of actual value.

I see Bill amended the blog since Vecchione will apparently be at the Hobey Baker ceremony on Sat. and won't be playing then. I don't see why he wasnt going to be in the lineup anyway... I mean whats the worst that could happen? The Flyers could be eliminated from the playoffs?

It's goofy. The rest of the league is signing their College players and getting them on the ice. Hell, Ottawa had one taking a run at the shoot out last night.

i obviously don't have a dog in the fight, but i find it hard to believe people get so lost in the semantics of saying a guy sucks or not.

obviously, yes. Vandevelde or guys like sestito or pick whatever scrub/goon you want do not suck at hockey in the purest sense of the word. they could skate/shoot circles around your average folk on this board. its clearly relative though. in relation to the pool of NHL talent as your comparable sample, its really not that much of a leap to say they "suck".

I like that the players won't be going to the Olympics. Hate the disruption to the season. However, its gonna be really silly when the NHL does a 180 and encourages participation in Beijing.

I've always resented professionals going to the Olympics. It just seemed very cool that our college kids and other amateurs got a chance to go and compete against the best in the world.

Yeah, I get that the entire Soviet bloc was basically sending professionals to the Olympics back in the day.

I also get that professionals want to represent their countries as much as the amateurs.

I'm just not a fan.

And to your last point: I'm fairly certain that the NHL cares a lot more about money than it does whether or not it looks silly. Also, I'm sure they're quite capable of performing all sorts of mental gymnastics to rationalize what is, as you pointed out a complete 180.
