I see the point of wanting to get a better pick. I really do. Makes sense. However, when I watch I just cannot remotely root for them to do anything but win. Just can't do it. its in my soul to get excited when they score...when they win. Esp when I go to the games and I go often.

I think of it more as a win-win.

I was going to say something along these lines yesterday, but left work. I view tanking as selling off players and purposely putting a bad team on the ice in order to get the best lottery odds possible. I don't even think the Avs are tanking this year, they are just that bad. I don't think hoping for a better pick once they're eliminated from the post season is tanking, but I will admit I like being called a tankboi.

What I look for now are positives for next year. That includes a higher pick, but also development of players, changes in coaching style and personnel, changes in players, etc. I think the Flyers could be focused more on some of that stuff instead of "winning" the game and getting two points. Instead they still rely on people that hopefully won't be here much longer in important situations. I wanted this to happen months ago, and they have been able to seen it somewhat with Weal. Maybe we wouldn't be talking about lottery picks if some other young, skilled players joined the Flyers before it was too late. The reliance on veteran players in an attempt to succeed this year was one of the most depressing things about this season.

He makes about half dozen really smart little plays pretty much every game. These are the kind of smart, poised plays that you only see the best Dmen in the league make.

More and more, this kid is starting to remind me of a faster, more solidly built Eric Desjardins.

seriously you watch him make such smart plays with poise and its almost expected at this point. I have no doubt his offensive game will catch up

I think we have to accept the fact that the Flyers are going to always try to put the best team on the ice they can, and to try to win, without violating their long term plan. Fans just want to see young players up with the team, even if they aren't ready to make the jump, and even if they aren't better than the players currently playing on the team are. A lot of it is assumptions. Weal is playing really well, and hopefully this is the result of a late bloomer and not just a hot streak. I wouldn't expect him to continue to score goals at this pace, but there are plenty of other positives to his game other than just the goal scoring. I want an overturn of the roster and a move to younger more talented players also, but I want it to happen naturally and with the correct timing and handling of those younger players, rather than just have they brought up and possibly rushed just to serve my wants as a fan.

What in football is known as the Backup QB syndrome? It also happens normally with the backup goalie in hockey unless the backup is a known quantity like Neuvy to a degree.

that's possibly true but I don't blame Hextall for wanting to make sure kids are ready and for wanting kids to earn it. I rather err on the side of caution. I know Zubrus has a long good career but I always felt as tho he could have been better had they not rushed him. I often wonder if Coots would have been better off not making the team as an 18 yo. Maybe, maybe not. But at this point I really want to see Hagg and Morin on the Flyers next year. same with Laughton and Leier. time to see what the kids can do.

Agreed. He has that innate ability to slow the game down. In all their history, I can only think of 4 Flyer Dmen that had this ability: Howe, Desjardins, Timonen and Pronger. That's pretty good company to be in!

Don't know if the kid is will be anything but I am always psyched to see them sign undrafted kids cause you never know and it cost you nothing but a contract.

for what its worth:

EliteProspects.com describes him as: "A strong and speedy two-way transition winger who possesses good puck and passing skills, and is equally adept at finishing plays as he is creating them. All-in-all, an offensively minded two-way winger that can produce strong numbers due to his patience and responsibility in all three zones."
