lol it is fair lefty... Give me 5 posters, pre-draft, who were on the Ehlers or Nylander train prior to Jake being drafted. You would be hard-pressed to name 5...

Secondly - why was is it a mistake? Jake is still young, there are PLENTY of 1st round picks that have been chosen in previous years that are still developing in the minors. Anthony Mantha just started his first full year in the show this year and he was drafted in 2013. Jake was rushed, he should have never stuck with the Canucks, he certaintly can't be labeled a complete bust yet until we know what we have in him. Give it 2 or 3 more years before we label him a complete bust.

I can't remember that far back, it was three years ago....Jesus I'm old'ish man, I have my limits lol.

In my opinion it was a mistake because he wasn't the player with the highest skill-set. I'm not saying he can't or won't become a good player. I'm saying he's now a project player when others chosen before him more quickly became NHL ready players.

Development played a role in that I'd suggest, however, it's clear they're also just plain and simply better players.

I get what you are saying. It's optics. Others drafted around him are in the NHL producing now so people say Canucks made a mistake. Just like OJ pick is maligned cause Flame boy is lighting it up.

I think they chose a player, they thought, fit the bill as a power forward, which they lacked. I don't think they chose the BPA, and I think the majority can agree with that.

And for the record, I know a lot of people outside of this little Canucks board, some of whom played pro hockey and are still involved in the game, who thought it was a mistake to take Virtanen. I disagreed with them...but again, I was wrong

on a roster full of softer players, the fanbase would have cried if we had picked a smaller framed scoring forward.

Like who? Edler and Hansen, who else has he produced from Europe in the past ten years? I haven't researched it so I'm curious.

Could he be credited with Tree?

Did they think that cause they knew something about his maturity and hockey IQ?

Precisley. Another soft euro was not something we needed at the time. Willing to give JV the benefit of some doubt and see how he comes along in the next few years. Not all top 10 picks turn out...it is what it is.

hindsight is 20/20. Anyone saying we should have got anyone else other than Virtanen is just being a female dog. I remember this entire thread was pumped on Virtanen. He fit the bill. Anyone saying we "should" have picked Ehlers or Nylander can go pound sand.
- Codes1087

the draft is a lottery...pretty tough to tell if a 17 year old kid won't be able to handle fame and money. Could anyone have predicted Horvat would turn out so well? No

6' 200lbs, 81 points in Erie this year, 5pts in 4 gms so far in the playoffs. This is his 4th full season there. He doubled his point product this year to last. Its hard to tell with Erie cus they're so stacked, numbers can be a bit deceiving. I'm hoping to see an Erie playoff game soon, i'll let you know more if possible.
- Brooks_Light

It is hard to tell. Even Carl Neill had 65 points or something in the Q this year. He doesn't project to be much.

Okay, not sure what you mean by that? They will do a 7F 3D protection. Hutton, Tree, Stecher are exempt players. So that leaves Edler, Tanev, Guddy and Sbisa among top D left to protect. Need to choose 3.
- Nuck4U

I think you have to trade Tanev before the draft. Ask Edler to waive for the expansion draft. IF he doesn't buy him out. Use the money from Edler to sign Karl Alzner (BC boy) and a Vet 2/3rd line pairing guy.

Alzner Stecher
Someone Gudbranson
Hutton Tryamkin

Fire WD and hire Darryl Sydor.

Like JV has the tools but not much of a toolbox. Good thing he's not just a skilled player.

Guess that's what the Canucks were trying to work on by keeping him up last season. Learning how to see the game. It's natural for others some can learn enough to be effective. So it didn't take cause of how much he lacked that hockey IQ. That was the real hockey set back. The conditioning and maturity were red herrings.

Thus, this season, with no junior CHL restrictions they were able to move him into the minors. What he needed from draft. Cause harder to get that for him in junior or they didn't trust the Flames organization.

So now, Green had to deconstruct him so he can learn how to play the game the right way for the NHL.

I see you want their vets out. if JB wants to do that he can just expose Edler. He has an NTC only not a NMC like LE and doesn't need to waive for Vegas expansion draft. But if he waived for a trade that would work for the rebuild.

I am suprised there has been so little said about the Raiders moving into LV in two years. I think this will sink the Golden Knights completely.

This isn't fair, there were a lot of people clamoring to draft either Ehlers or Nylander, unfortunately I wasn't one of them though. I didn't know enough about Jake's game or his history, thus I wanted him.

I, unlike others around here, will own that mistake though. I make mistakes but I'll admit I made them. Probably should have gone with the higher skill-set. Which is where I'll always lean now.

- LeftCoaster

Do you think Ehlers or Nylander would free wheel on this team? Same as bringing in one tough guy won't change this team. Benning would have been ripped for drafting another soft Euro

Until Sedins Tanev Edler are gone this team is going to be a bunch of pansy asses collecting a paycheck and doing little else.

The LV Golden Showers were doomed the moment Gary and his merry band of idiots signed the papers. That NHL franchise will be bleeding cash within 5-10 years like PHX/ARZ and the NFL team will most likely not succeed there as well long-term.

I wanted Ehlers or Del colle

Because jv was coming off shoulder surgery and if they wanted him I wanted them to trade back to about 10, after the top 4 things were all over the place until about 12th.. kinda similar to this draft.

Morning...

New blog is up, musing on whether Travis Green's track record qualifies him to be the next coach of the Canucks.

JV was such a weird player in Junior. Good on the boards, never seemed to drive the slot, tons of goals from the point on the powerplay. The kid was kind of a mess.

Don't have time to look up the thread, but I definitely popped in here and questioned the JV pick following the first day of that draft.

Joulevi is gonna be a great pick though. A better pick than Dubios or Puljujarvi imo. He moves the puck up the ice like Hedman did at that age.
