definitely.

but guys play with ragged or cut out palms all the time. and most are not leather at all anymore. i was more talking about protection from impacts. and getting stepped on?

also the composite sticks that are used nowadays don't one, have fiberglass on them and two, don't splinter like that. they just break in two.

I guess you're 100% right. There's no chance those illegal open palms would ever risk injury from a broken stick.

If it was the equipment then there would be plenty of players with broken hands. Sad defense for a dirty player.

I agree Newgod77, 1st ever hand injury from a slash...league should look at it.

I think the NHL needs to start calling the penalties that are in their rule book. When Johnny Gaudreau's finger was broken by a slash from Eric Staal, that was the 17th slash to Gaudreau in that game ! None of which were called. Like hooking and holding a decade+ ago, slashes are not being called. They don't need to even make any changes to the rules, just call the penalties that are already there.

+1

The biggest issue here isn't the construction of gloves, it's the wildly inconsistent officiating and supplementary discipline from one game to the next, one case to the next. Would slashing like this on the hands be as commonplace if it was enforced for what it is, and 2 minute penalties were handed out like candy for it? I think not.

I see a chop by Crosby, definitely worthy of a penalty and certainly not a gentlemanly play but basically your run-of-the-mill slash.

And this attitude by officials is exactly the problem. Call the d*mn penalties and the players, although not rocket scientists, will figure it out. 'Hmmm, if I slash this guy, I'll have to go in the box, and feel shame. Perhaps I shouldn't slash him.'

Just call the rules in the rule book, especially slashing, cross-checking and interference. The refs have seemed to have it figured out on hooking. And DOG.

Scoring will go up. Fans will be happy, the game will be more fun to watch. Skilled players will no longer be stopped by illegal actions of those less talented.

Seems so simple.

The Ref who called the game most by the book was Rob Schick. He caught alot of flak because of it. Fans and announcers and coaches would always complain about the endless parade to the penalty box. Stewy would let the players play and not call the Chincey stuff.

Bottom line is no matter how the game is called by the refs, someone or some fans will always say they need to do a better job. Can't make everyone or even most people happy.

This could all be solved if the players were able to police their own game. The punks like Crosby would eventually have to defend themselves. I thought it was funny if you watch the video of the slash the guy with one hand goes after Crosby after the slash and he turns and runs from him.

The "Cup" was made for comfort.

Oh, come on now....Crossberry was just "going for the puck."
Of course, the puck isnt even in the frame of the video.
But he's elite, so I must be wrong.

this is logic....which has no place in the NHL.
