The longer Petersen plays the less likely he signs here
- Stripes77

I watched Saturday's game and the second period Sunday.

If Petersen has a cape, it wasn't showing in either of those two games.

saw someone say it would be more likely...im not sure how it changes things either way.

You sign him now you can burn a year off of his ELC, but with the Frozen 4 not set to play until the 6th the Sabres and Amerks season is over with (or has 1 or 2 games left).

Had he lost already there are more games for him to play in pro hockey.

Now he can declare in August he isn't going back to school and becomes a FA.

he is not signing here

if they don't win it all, he is going back to school

if he wins it all he will be at a level higher than vesey, signs wherever he wants

I don't think there is a NHL team that will hand a goaltender a spot on the big club.

He is going to look at the goalie situation around the league and pick his best spots.

Buffalo is probably up there assuming Ullmark is in Buffalo next season (or Vegas). But for opportunity I am sure there are a few teams that have more.

This really only happens with positional players, its more likely he would have gotten an ATO with the ELC kicking in next year.

They offered him a deal in the summer so its obviously not as big a concern to him as something like which franchise offers him the surest or most direct route.

His signing here is entirely dependant on our commitment to lehner and where he wants to live in general.

I'm going to take a more optimistic view on Petersen and say he will sign with us. He has a good relationship with our goalie coach Andrew Allen and has a great relationship with Seamus Kotyk, who is an ex goalie and scouts goaltenders for us. Petersen's best opportunity could be here.

if he goes free agent he has lots of options

stars, as a starter
bolts as a possible platoon
vegas
back up to any team in california
flames will need 2 goalies
colorado
back up for minnesota
flyers, possible starter
and about 10 other teams as well as perhaps a chance to play for the hawks as a backup

When you hold all the marbles like Petersen does he could have said I will sign if you burn a year...

No other team had that chance except Buffalo.

That being said he is a goalie, and nobody knows how goalies are going to turn out even though he looks all the part you just don't know with them.

If he leaves it will suck but again he is a goalie not a 6'4 225 blazing defensemen that can move the puck and play 25 minutes a night in the NHL...

hes got nothing to gain from going back to school next year. As far as development and opportunity goes this is probably the best year for him to search around and get the best deal.

BTW Vesey has what 26 points this year?

He started the year on fire but has cooled off tremendously.

Murray said as much in an interview. He said the Sabres brass told his team that he has nothing left to accomplish in the NCAA

Agreed, but since Buffalo is the only team that can offer it I just think Petersen could've done this in the summer and he'd be one year further along in his pro development.

I know its not the same effect as if Jake McCabe decided not to sign but still stings to watch a solid prospect leave for nothing. Especially at a position where imo there's still a great deal of uncertainty.

I had to check game totals I knew Ennis missed a ton and it felt like Girgensons missed a ton as well (guess he just disappeared for much of the year)

112 games between them

my point is Vesey at 26 points would be an upgrade over either of those scrubs

This is still a thing? Unless you are taking past Lehner.

Especially if Murray is still here, Lehner is the guy. Time for everyone to just accept it. You don't have to like it but with his play this year he is showing it is his net.

But he isn't going to be a 72 game goaltender so a good backup that pushes him would be good to add.

I'm only concerned with players that we have, if he goes, he goes. We need to move on.

I agree but for 1 I thought he would be a 40 pt player this year. At least if he was in Buffalo on Jacks wing.

Not that I watch the Rangers but who has he been playing with?

looks more like it's the opposing forwards net

I kid. Im just saying its not like the centre position where you can say this spot is locked down for the next 5 years.

At what point do you consider trading Petersen if you know he won't sign here?
