Is there a study that correlates fitness and injury prevention in hockey?

If Phil hasn't been injured because of his excellent dedication and work ethic, then by the same logic Steven Stamkos must have terrible work ethic and dedication.

Have you honestly worked out with him or do you just read Simmons and form opinions there? What has Kessel ever done to show he's going to have a major slow down other than play every game every year and put up good point totals constantly? It's not like he plays a style he's going to get wore down really quick, he's probably been hit 10 times his whole career and been in 5 board battles. I'd bet Kessel is putting up 50 plus points the rest of his contract.

Kessel was born a human and humans tend to decline physically, usually starting in their early 30s. You might be right and he defies the odds.

My decline will start at 60, for I am mighty, powerful and great.

It's interesting that Stamkos is a workout warrior each summer and is one of the fittest players in the league yet Phil is a coca cola drinking hot dog eating warrior. However it's Stamkos who has now had 3 long term injuries while Phil is healthy as a horse. I think Phil is just a freak of nature.

It's not just hockey.

Tiger woods worked out like a mad man and has been paying for it now.

Phil Mickelson use to be a pudgy golfer and has at best trimmed down. Yet he is still going strong and hasn't had any major injuries.

It's important for players, to be in great shape so they can compete with the other players. I just wonder if these players, work out too much. We have all heard the stories from the good old days about how players would drink and party and eat all summer and then get in shape during training camp. It's one of the main reasons why the 72 Team Canada got off to such a poor start against the Russians who trained year round.

Anyway, now we all know that today's players, train year round and most are in excellent shape. But I wonder if the body has enough time to heal. Especially after long playoff runs. Is it too much hockey? Pre season, regular season, playoffs, world championships, etc. Throw in all the travel... I don't know. It seems players suffer more groin and knee injuries now. The game is faster. The players are bigger, stronger and faster than ever before.

Does Stamkos just have bad luck? Kessel good luck? Or is there a correlation between training and being injured? Are these players too tight? All the twisting and turning in hockey. The over developed legs putting too much weight and stress on the joints? I don't know.

Iin boxing, the worst thing for a fighter is to be muscle bound. It limits your range and slows you down because your muscles are too heavy. I'm just spit balling here. Is it similar in hockey?

Jagr apparently works ultra hard to keep his current physical state.

The summer before the stomach hernia, Lupul did MMA training to increase his strength and durability.

Yes he does. His workouts are legendary. Same with Chris Chelios when he played until he was 48. He rode an exercise bike in the sauna. I tried that at the gym I go to. I almost burned out my lungs after 5 minutes!

I guess we can all cite various examples of how exercising caused a positive or a negative result. Maybe we can only judge it on an individual basis. Maybe there's some validity to over training.
