I would still describe Hakstol as intense. I don't think his reactions on the bench really show what he might say in the locker room either.

The vocal passion guys seem to be the ones with the shortest shelf life too

They do.

At the end of the day all coaches expire as some point. Nature of the beast. Curious as to when it happens with Hak, if we have a similar season next year.

I get that this year was another 'retool' year or whatever you may call it, but it was a fail in my eyes. Boys kind of went backwards. Thank god for Provorov.

The answer to your question is of course, any coach will. However, look at the PK ice time and tell me that VdV/PEB aren't getting too much time. All I know is that when I go by the eye test, Couturier/Simmonds seem to be a much more effective PK pair. Having the 2 pairings getting equal time would make more sense to me.

You list forward but where are the defense? Are they not part of this kill too?

What would your eye test look like if Couturier and Simmonds were playing the same minutes in the same situations, against the same quality of opponents, that Vandevelde and Bellemare are?

In your eyes. But Hextall has said this could be a step back this year. And they could be in the same situation next year with more youth added to the lineup.

So, if I'm reading correctly, here is what the Flyers need to do:

1. Get rid of Hakstol for a "real" top-5 NHL coach. You know, one of the 5 best should be readily available and willing to come here.

2. Get all better players. Young, cheap ones. Can't we just get a few more Provorov's and a McDavid or 6?

3. Get ca. 2012 Henrik Lundqvist

Would be a start.

They are, but you have VDV and Belle being treated like something they are not.

Those guys are far away from the Pahlsson/Moen/Niedermayer group. Betts/Sjostrom. Lappy/Betts. (From the top of my head)

They should stop being treated as such.

This is a hypothetical question, so I'm not going to waste my time, but I will say this:

FACT: The Flyers PK is not good
FACT: VdV/PEB get, by far, the most PK time of any of the forwards

Draw your own conclusions.

I'm more puzzled with his recent use of first Neuvy nonstop
- BiggE

Do you think it was a big coincidence that Neuvirth got an extension from the GM right after that run of starts?

No doubt, as are the goalies, but no 2 Dmen seem to play such a high percentage of the PK as do PEB/VdV. Plus, I think a lot of their struggles on the PK come from being too passive at the top of the box and that is mainly on the forward duo. I also think starting the PK with PEB taking the opening faceoff is a poor idea as he is mediocre at best on draws.

When you have a mediocre overall group of Dmen, and aren't getting top notch goaltending, the best way to kill penalties is to win the faceoff, get it out, and press the hell out the pp unit trying your best to not let them set up. I rarely see the Flyers doing any of these things.

If it were up to me, I'd go back to letting Giroux start the PK, mainly to win the faceoff and go with the following rotation:

PEB/Giroux (if they get a quick clear, replace Giroux with Read)
Coots/Simmonds
PEB/VdV
Fip/Read or Coots/Simmonds (depends on the game situation)

With the way the PK has struggled, why not change it up?

Not really, I think it has more do with needing to sign someone for the ED draft and the organizations feelings (whether justifiable or not) towards Steve Mason.

Almost any goalie is going to say he wants to play every game, you don't make the NHL if you don't have that mindset. This is why coaches are hired, you can't have the players making these decisions.
- BiggE

I don't completely agree. I am not trying to suggest that the goalies make the call, I am just saying I bet they have preferences that get discussed. Certain goalies are mentally prepared to be a backup and some are for starting. Some prefer a certain consistency to the days off, etc. Seems like the worst thing for the goalies here was not knowing who the actual starter was. That and having different expectations for each goalie seemed off

Either I am not reading things correctly but this is what I found.

Bellemare, ATOI SH - 2:49, GA/60: 7.7
Vandevelde, ATOI SH - 2:31, GA/60: 6.6
Couturier, ATOI SH - 1:47, GA/60: 7.8
Simmonds, ATOI SH - 1:31, GA/60: 6.0

Numbers look pretty close.
