Risto should have gotten a minor for interference. If you want to play the injury card, fine, you can argue it was worth 5+GM. But there was no targeting, no hands up, no sudden lane change, nothing. If you're trying to maliciously crush somebody, you don't use your butt to do it. Is that hit a penalty if the puck did get there? No. Maybe next time Crosby shouldn't lob a homicide pass to a player who's got three guys closing in on him.

I would be guessing that even if the puck had arrived on Guentzel's stick prior to the hit the refs would have called the same penalty, not out of interest in player safety, but just because it was Buffalo that made the hit and not Pittsburgh. The refs somehow managed to miss the spear to O'Reilly's groin (not surprised) and they somehow managed to miss Bonino slashing Reinhart in the face even though the puck was laying right next to him (not surprised) I know it wasn't intentional, but still a penalty none the less. I'm actually kind of surprised Kane didn't get a game misconduct also. Sidney's goal was a thing of beauty and if he was a Sabre I would love him too, but he's not, so it's my right to hate his whiney guts.

I'm no rules expert, but from what I understand, the play by Ristolainen was correctly called. First, he hit a guy who didn't have the puck or didn't just have the puck... that's interference. Two, the said hit caused an injury... that means a major penalty is the proper call. And three, once the ref calls that type of major, the game misconduct is automatic.

As for supplemental discipline, this hit didn't strike me as a "headhunting" type play, so I'd say Ristolainen should get off with time served.

As for Crosby... honestly, I don't see enough Penguins games to provide a proper perspective in terms of whether he (to prosocute) routinely does that or if (to defend) he takes so many cheap shots that "what to you expect him to do". But hitting guys there will come back to him at some point... the more he does it, the more it will come back.

If the puck got through, and he received the the pass as he got hit the result would've been the same, except no penalty. So it was an awesome hit unless you're a penguins fan.

There wasn't much of an answer by the Pens after the hit. It used to be that after somebody obliterates a player like that, line brawls break out.

Ristolainen's hit was only illegal in the sense that it was an interference penalty. At max he will get an additional game. Unfortunately Geuntzel had his head down and was unable to avoid the contact, which led to the injury.
