Believe me I wanted to defend him last night. I was pretty mad he got tossed until I saw a different angle.

.

- Stripes77

this proves what a grey area it is

4 angles look fine

one angle looks suspect

refs get a lot of leverage

and oh yeah it's a fast game and a tip of the puck a fraction of a second earlier determines the outcome

And full speed it really is hard to tell with his head because he has it so far down, and with Risto turning his back, but once you start to play around with all the angles and slo-mo, you are right. And at full speed i didn't realize he left his feet because its quick. He was a good 8 inches off the ice.

Give or take.

- CoHo_to_B-Lo

Hey oh!

Really this comes down to Risto not facing the player he is about to hit.

If he would have been he would have seen he wasn't getting the puck.

He will learn.

Sure but say the puck wasn't tipped the Pens player would have had his head up by then.

Also say Risto isn't trying to Kronwall him and is actually facing him.

I saw a few different angles the first one it looked fine all the rest looked bad. The main TV angle was bad but the behind the play ones make it pretty obvious.

I would suspect when they release the suspension video they will key is on the head meeting back aspect.

But it was tipped... just like if the light stayed yellow a little longer I wouldn't have received that red light ticket in the mail the other day.

I get what everyone is saying.

But as a referee we are trained to look for certain things when a hit occurs.

The fan in me says eh not a big deal but the ref in me says yeah that's a bad hit.

It was my fault I wasn't paying attention to the light, there was a damn semi I was trying to get around.

So i'll put this question to you....

Is there any real accountability for the refs in the NHL....especially on blatantly missed calls (i.e. Crosby puttin his stick on ROR's balls) or calling the game unfairly in favor of one team over the other (i.e. any time we play the pens)

I know this sounds like female doging..but I seriously want to know if there is oversight.

Yes there is, but not publicly.

You should read Paul Stewarts blogs. He talks about it all the time.

Refs will lose playoff games (more money in their pocket), they get rated by game and season. They are fighting for their jobs just like the players.

It is just not public knowledge.

I really want to share an email all of the staff of the ECHL got the other day but its not something I should share.

Basically screw up bad enough you lose games and you wont work next season

No problem.

The NHL did something about 15-20 years ago to make the refs unknown. They removed the names on the sweaters of officials for numbers.

The refs aren't allowed to give interviews with the media after a game.

So the refs basically said what happens to us stays private then.

The NHL agreed.

I will say this working a 3 man system in that league is so tough.

There's no clear direction from NHL brass to the NHL Refs union, it seems. There is was the Shannaban period where things were actually taken seriously, then the league realized that guys like OV would have to be held to these standards too, so they backed off the suspensions. Now if you have no prior history, you'll just get a warning. That loop goes on forever. I'm sure Crosby will get a call from the league "Hey Syd, you can't get people in the groin, OK? We won't have a hearing because you've never had a hearing before, but if i have to make 2-3 more calls, we're gonna have to have a call about you getting a hearing in 2-3 more calls."

Then there's the matter of what is or isn't obstruction, which flips on its head game to game and regular season to playoffs. Although at this point, the NHL doesn't seem to care what the fans want. Scoring is ultra low? "Lets make goalie pants a size smaller." The rulebook isn't called and i assume that's a league issue too

The league handles supplemental discipline not the refs.

When it comes to the standard being called the league is the one that meets with the Officials Union and they go over how they want things called.

Like after the lockout there was huge emphasis on obstruction. That is not the case anymore.

The refs call the game the way the powers that be in the NHL want the game called.

Instead of meeting with the Union and deciding how to call things, the league should write clear, precise rules and have the officials enforce them, rather than deciding before the year what should be called. It's just insane.

It happens in every league.

Each year there is a new emphasis on what they want called.

For example 5 years ago the NCAA but an emphasis on hits to the head. They were automatically given a 5 and a game for a head check.

That is still a rule, two years ago they made the emphasis on embellishment. You can be certain that more embellishment calls were made.

The person in charge of supplemental discipline should be a retired ref IMO.

I have a visceral reaction to the level of obstruction in the game today, largely because i think the 05-07 scoring frenzy was so fun to watch (a novel concept for the NHL) and the product today could be so much better. The league can focus on head hits and still call interference. The game is so much crappier than it needs to be IMO. The refs union is obviously going to do whatever the league wants them to do as long as the refs are safe and well paid, but i have to imagine some of them think the game sucks.
