that would have been big balls since pastrnak was not even a lock to go in the first rd
- homiedclown

Agreed, it never would have happened.

Now, if he had traded down, secured more picks, including another first round pick, and chosen him later, then maybe the genius label would have stuck.

However, they needed quality centers so badly at the time it was never going to happen.

This time next year, we will forget Ekblad even had a tough time this season.

Draisaitl was the only other one considered as worthy of #2 overall.

That being said, had Murray went "against the grain" and did pick Pastrnak #2 overall, he might be labeled as a genius right now.

- buffalofan19

The pressure for Pastrnak to play up to #2 overall hype on a bad team would have crippled him

His set up in Boston has been near perfect

Oh absolutely. I'm not saying he should have done it. I'm just saying that had he done it, a lot of the criticisms Murray takes on now would not exist.

Should we be crediting the last two drafts to royce instead of Murray?

Was hired in august after the 14 draft. As director of amateur scouting

If that's going to make you feel better about liking the draft, I guess it's the mechanism you can use. Good thing it only took nearly 3 years after his hire for an excuse to be made for people who were praising the recent draft, we know Murray can do no right!

it's not bad when you have guys like Marchand, Krejci and Bergeron

honestly I thought they would miss the playoffs this season and these guys are getting the job done

if only ror, kane and okposo could get it done like those 3

there was a big difference in the last 2 drafts vs the first draft in 14

don't get me wrong, johannson and willman, and brown may turn out ok

but the last 2 drafts appear to be outstanding

See this is why i bang the drum on moving out wingers for defencemen so often. Torey Krug doesnt get nearly enough credit for the work he's done for that team. Ditto Brandon Carlo.

The problem with the "if you move a winger for d-man you're creating another hole" is that the size of these holes is not even remotely near equal (phrasing).

in theory it's easier to plug in a winger than a d man

build around the centers and your top 4 d

plug in the rest

unless you have someone special on a wing of course

Its even easier when that someone is the centre.

Since we are all upset at draft picks, im upset that we drafted;

Persson instead of Berglund or Foligno in 2006.
Myers and Ennis instead of KArlsson and Josi in 2008.
Kassian instead of Palmieri or Johnasson in 2009.
Pysyk instead of Kuznetsov in 2010.
Armia instead of Namestikov, Rakell, or Rattie in 2011.
Grigorenko and Girgensons instead of Faksa,Wilson Teravainen or Hertl in 2012
Zadorov instead of Theodore in 2013
Reinhart instead of just about any other player in rd 1 in 2014.

I just made this team a cup contender and easily should have won 10 already. Why cant a GM see this, this is super easy stuff to predict.

In the mid80s some of my buds and I would lose entire weekends to cases of Weidemann's beer, 1/2 oz of dirty weed, and hotly contested games of RISK.

I was always trying to find a reliable alternative to "the Australian Strategy."

Fans of 29 other teams are just as upset with their GMs for this incompetence.

South America only had 2 main defense positions.

Yeah but there are more countries to control at the outset, and if your opponents allowed you to set up in that continent uncontested then you should be looking for a higher quality game.

I'd like to see Falk, Fedun and Austin in the lineup the rest of the year to see if they can be competent.

I liked Austins game last night.

We could have several cheap options for the 5-7 D-spot.
Risto
McCabe
Austin
Falk
Fedun

If Guhle surprises (not counting on it he would fit top 4) We would need to bring in another top 3 D-man somehow.

This is where i suggest something absolutely ridiculous like trading talent up front for talent on the blueline and then 10 pages of comments on how im slighting that player because i had the audacity to suggest exploring trade ideas involving bringing back a stud d-man might be a good idea.
