dont put words in mouth...didnt say problem

did say he is supposed to be our top D man In our top pair
we have been searching for a mate on top pair

MAYBE our top pair is like our centers not great just very solid & productive.....

Mac needs atop D like Shattenkirk to define things ..he isnt assertive ALL the time

Allow me to step in here:
McD is tagged as the teams #1D man by the organization and fans,
He is not flashy, hes not the fastest doesn't have the hardest shot, he's not silky smooth like Eric Karlson, hes not tough and powerful like Burns, etc...

So the question I feel like Dundee is asking is this:
Is he truly a #1 Dman, or is he just the NYR's #1 DMan because he is just the best of what we have
Where does he rank among the league's top Defensemen

I believe most of us would say he ranks around 15-20 in the league... At his best, he's probably sniffing top 10. And at 4.7M per for another 2 years, we get our money's worth and then some!

Problem with this is that Shattenkirk is not a TOP D. He has great offensive ability coupled with ok defensive ability. He was never going to be our savior (Ranger Jesus).

BTW, it's nice to be back!! Made it through my first ban.

I don't think anyone will argue with his VALUE. That contract is solid.

I agree with you and Pete. McD does EVERYTHING at a high level, but probably nothing at a truly ELITE level. Are there Dmen you would trade him for? Certainly. Would you want him gone from your roster? I think not. For my money, I call him a #1.

I think McDonagh is a very good defenseman and would probably be the #1 on a lot of teams in the league...but I don't consider him a "true" #1 guy. I think he lacks the offensive production/talent to be consider a "true" #1 defenseman.

I would probably place him somewhere in the top 20-25 defensemen in the NHL. Maybe in the 15-20 range, but I'm not so sure.

That is my sentiment as well. I think he may be hurt by the fact he doesn't put up huge offensive numbers, doesn't have the cannon shot, doesn't throw the huge hit, isn't ovelry vocal. Maybe he is like a Lidstrom light. Lidstrom did things quietly, but he did ALL of them at a whole other level, that's why he was noticed

Close...a hotstove Tanner was involved in. And it came about 5 days after my post! Is that normal? Plus, I was pretty sure I've gotten away with worse in the past!!

I stopped frequenting his blogs, but I guess I need to stay away completely.

Yeah he's pretty reliable and steady. I would say the lack of point production is the main thing that keeps him out of that "top defensemen" category. He's not perfect elsewhere, but his mistakes seem to be somewhat-rare events so I would certainly say he's a very reliable defenseman.

I see him as somewhat similar to Leddy, in terms of his value...not style of play. Leddy is a exponentially-better skater but McDonagh is a hell of a lot better in his own end. They have similar overall point production, although I'd tip the scale in favor of Leddy because he's typically scored more goals than McDonagh..but it's pretty close in that regard. I think most other things would go in McDonagh's favor.

I think McDonagh is a better overall player than Leddy for sure, for whatever that's worth. But Leddy is a lot more fun to watch play.

Agree 100%. Anyone thinking Shattenkirk is above average on D is misinformed. He's a very good offensive defenseman, but his defense is not what he's known for.

Anyone that doesn't think he'd help this team more then any player available next summer is misinformed also tho, would you agree? RH D, PP point man, Mac partner you couldn't hand pick a better option, unless it's Burns of course but I don't think he'd be available
