Jay Greenberg (and I, because I wrote the first draft of the related chapter in Flyers at 50) detailed exactly how it went down. Separate yourself from how it turned out and try to set your mind to the circumstances as they existed at the time.
After the disastrous goalie carousel -- Boosh, Bob, Leighton -- in the 2011 playoffs, Ed Snider (perhaps letting public opinion sway him too much) demanded, vehemently, that the Flyers solve their goaltending issue once and for all. Bryzgalov, a year removed from being a Vezina finalist with the Coyotes and with a Cup ring (albeit as a backup) in Anaheim, was available.
In private, Holmgren and Jeff Reese both opined that Bobrovsky would be fine as the starter and would continue to blossom after a promising rookie year in which he faded a bit in the second half. Snider didn't want to bank on counting on that happening right away.
The Flyers acquired Bryz. Bob was an unhappy backup for one year but was unwilling to do it a second year. No one knew that amnesty buyouts would be part of the next CBA (that idea wasn't looking promising at the time).
Bob demanded a trade under threat of going back to Russia. This was also before the NHL and KHL had an agreement to honor each other's contracts.
Holmgren told Bob's agent he'd work out a trade but, in return, please don't go public with the trade demand. They agreed. Bob was traded to Columbus.
So now you know. Oh, and one more thing.... there is zero guarantee that Bob would have won a Vezina here. Also, in the years between his Vezina season and this one, he was oft-injured and rather inconsistent in 2015-16. - bmeltzer
And the fact that he said he had zero confidence after game two but it's cool to blame Lavy for misusing him and Holmes for trading him for nothing

Konency and Provorov may just turn into significant members of the core. Can't wait to see Lindblom next season to add to the top 6. |

Yeah, never got the Lavy hate on that. That whole poop went down because of a systematic failure of an organization to draft and develop decent goalies for YEARS. It's just a shame Bob had to be traded before they realized that pulling poop like Bryz was worse than waiting for young kids to develop. |

Read this the other day and it's a great assessment of TWD

Great article and I agree with a lot of it. I went into this season excited to see the Kingdom and to see Rick's group and them get together with Hilltop (hopefully offing Gregory in the process) and have it out with a Neagan in a huge kick ass battle.
Instead, it's just way too much filler and way too much time dwelling on boring characters like Dwight, Rosita, Eugene etc... They really need to kick it up a couple notches soon or viewership is going to drop even more |

Sadly, they pissed too many points away recently vs teams they needed to beat. Also, their schedule is brutal. |

They'll lose some more, people will get negative again, win a game and people get positive. What will probably happen is they won't lose every game (shocker) and will look good some nights, but probably stand pat in the standings. |

Absolutely but consider time and place. You have a kid who is supremely athletic but has been in North America for less than a year. Is still learning the language and starting goal for a team in the the best league in the world that went to the Cup the year before. Regardless of potential, he wasn't mentally there in the moment any Lavy had to make the call to go with what got him there last year. It's cruel fate that Boosh could go side to side and Then had to put all hopes on Leightenen which blew how up in our collective faces before going back to Bob and hoping he was able to mentally be there. It was too much to ask of a kid who was out of his cultural elelement. Had he been given the time ,who know how things turn out........but it's the easy narrative to say Lavy mishandled him...
That's about as much serious hockey talk you miserable (frank)s will get from me |
