I'd really prefer someone who helps them get older and worse TBH. Give me this draft's Danny Watkins. |

I see the Devils picking up right where they left off since the Flyers left town. Now 12 losses in 13 games, ending a 10 game losing streak dismantling the Flyers by 4 goals. Yet people try and find a way to rationalize it. Amazing.
The consensus before the season was a playoff bubble team, well 7th in an 8 team division and a punching bag to the team in last place in said division isn't exactly a bubble team. It's more like a bottom feeder.
Won't be long until people start going apepoop that the Flyers didn't draft Werenski. |

Though in all honesty, trading him and signing Bryz is possibly the worst series of decisions this organization ever made. Laviolette panicked and misused him in the playoffs. Then the organization panicked by going after Bryz and later trading Bob because they were worried he would go back to Russia for nothing.
I thought so then, I think so now. |

Amazingly a 23 year old goaltender with all that potential netted the same return as a 35 year old rental dman Pavel Kubina. A 2nd and 4th round pick. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise considering who the GM was in both trades. |

Gagner wasn't given a chance in Philly. He didn't play particularly well, but I don't think he was used correctly. Hextall letting him walk made sense, the Hartnell trade hasn't worked out. |

Giroux is tied for leading the league in PP points. There's a positive.
Honestly I was shocked when I'd heard that given how much he's clearly struggled this year. |

just wish he wouldnt have missed that handful of games to start the year. could have the art ross/richard locked up.
hate the guy, but what marchand is doing is amazing.
kane has panarin on his line and mcdavid has draisaitl, both right there in the top ten of scoring in their own right.

He spoke today about just recently starting to feel confident that he won't reinjure his hip and that he's finally starting to feel like himself. This gives me some confidence that he can have a bounce back year next season. He may never be quite the player he was at 25, but if he can improve his ES play and put up 25 goals and 65-70 points, that's a legit 1C these days. |

Jay Greenberg (and I, because I wrote the first draft of the related chapter in Flyers at 50) detailed exactly how it went down. Separate yourself from how it turned out and try to set your mind to the circumstances as they existed at the time.
After the disastrous goalie carousel -- Boosh, Bob, Leighton -- in the 2011 playoffs, Ed Snider (perhaps letting public opinion sway him too much) demanded, vehemently, that the Flyers solve their goaltending issue once and for all. Bryzgalov, a year removed from being a Vezina finalist with the Coyotes and with a Cup ring (albeit as a backup) in Anaheim, was available.
In private, Holmgren and Jeff Reese both opined that Bobrovsky would be fine as the starter and would continue to blossom after a promising rookie year in which he faded a bit in the second half. Snider didn't want to bank on counting on that happening right away.
The Flyers acquired Bryz. Bob was an unhappy backup for one year but was unwilling to do it a second year. No one knew that amnesty buyouts would be part of the next CBA (that idea wasn't looking promising at the time).
Bob demanded a trade under threat of going back to Russia. This was also before the NHL and KHL had an agreement to honor each other's contracts.
Holmgren told Bob's agent he'd work out a trade but, in return, please don't go public with the trade demand. They agreed. Bob was traded to Columbus.
So now you know. Oh, and one more thing.... there is zero guarantee that Bob would have won a Vezina here. Also, in the years between his Vezina season and this one, he was oft-injured and rather inconsistent in 2015-16.

This confirms what I believed all along. The Bryz signing was mainly on Snider, not Holmgren. When your boss insists that you go after the top goalie on the FA market, your hands are pretty well tied. All else that followed, was pretty much inevitable. |

Sorry, but it's still a bubble team in a big-picture perspective.
Over the course of a long season, it's a gap of an roughly an additional 1 or 2 games per month in up-for-grab games.
That's how the same group could struggle for the first half of the 2015-16 season, have the league's second-best or third-best record after the All-Star break and end up a 96-point playoff team. The reverse happened this year. They had the NHL's fourth-best record on Dec. 15, 20 wins by Christmas and then the bottom dropped out. |
