Hockey related: T.J. Oshie and Brent Burns might be the first 2 non-goalies to peak and hit their prime at age 30.

Traditionally, we know that goalies tend to enter their prime around 27-30 and it usually lasts until about 33-ish.

Skaters it's more like 25-30 and then a sharp decline.

But I'm surprised. Oshie gonna hit 30 goals for the first time at 30 and Brent Burns is a beast, 27 goals for two seasons in a row now as a defenseman. Nuts.

Burns stands at the blue line and simply fires shot after shot at the net. Yeah they get through more then most players ........but still not impressed.

he has 70 pts in 71 games....as a D-man. he's obviously doing more than simply standing at the blue line and firing shots

It really speaks to how the style of the game has, in my mind, devolved from a fast, open up and down game into a game of clutching, holding, interference packed game that has considerably neutralized the highly skilled players in the league.
The NHL got it right in 2005 and 2006 seasons..then the old guard owners quickly turned the game into what we have today...which can be a snooze-fest on many nights.

I wish the league would do 2 things:
1- go back to calling the infractions as they happen to set-free the highly skilled players than fans come to enjoy watching
2- make the ice surface closer to Olympic size. Take out a row of seats around the rink. This will never happen due to the revenue implications...but one can hope.

Sharks tickets in the first three rows around the rink will go from $160 per game to $300 - $400 per game next year. They are building a new restaurant and giving everyone in the first three rows access to it .......... food and drinks included in the ticket price.

When he's on the ice and the Sharks are controlling their zone he's literally standing at the corner at the blue line peppering the front of the net with shots. I was amazed last week watching it against the Sabres.

As opposed to the other defensemen who dont stand at the blueline in the o-zone? Id bet a decent chunk of his goals are a little more skill and a little less just throwing pucks at the net and having them bounce in.

Yeah I agree ........ I'm over simplifying it but alot of his points come this way. Even Sharks announcers bring up the fact that he has this uncanny ability to get those shots to the net ............. which of course lead to juicy rebounds for his mates and boost his assist numbers at the same time.

We don't agree on anything it seems but you basically ripped those two points from my brain. Completely agree.

If you commission all NHL teams to renovate their rinks over a summer, it is 100% doable. You knock out the first few rows of seats, keep the first row at a higher elevation (making Hockey more of a spectator sport with everyone looking DOWN onto the field of play) and up ticket prices by a % according to the cost of the renovations. Less injuries, more scoring, at the very least, more creativity with the extra few feet of room.

This eliminates the trapezoid and a large amount of the clutching and grabbing since speed players are no longer being punished for being able to blow by guys.

That's my biggest issue, is they punish speed and stick handling, not just the size of the rink, but all of the uncalled infractions.

It's become almost unwatchable this season, especially seeing Eichel (and other star players but he's the one I watch) get absolutely mugged and molested along the boards about 5 times a game.

I knew he would crash back down to Earth. He may recover but I smell a little Naethan Paetch or Marc-Andre Gragnani in him.

this reeks of tyler myers 2.0.

Its strange though, in that instance the underlying numbers were bad so youd almost expect it to happen.

Ghost's numbers for the most part are still above average so you'd think just based on # of minutes alone hed stumble into a primary assist or two.

To have none with that talent is just ridiculous.

not everyones favourite stat but also interesting that 3 of the top 6 d-men leaders in takeaways play for the hurricanes.

I'm not sure if you heard but a little while back Rivet was on his Instigators show talking about how much raw talent and how great of a hockey player Myers could have been...but he said Lindy NEVER coached Myers up when he made mistakes in the d-zone so that when people started exploiting those mistakes Myers just lost all confidence

coached as in disciplined or something? It got even worse for him when everyone wanted him to play a certain style just because of his size.

If i recall Rivet said Lindy would never tell him how to fix any of his mistakes...he'd just let them go and Myers would keep doing them

Then where's Rivet's responsibility in all this? He was on the same team, he could've taken him aside and helped him out too.

I was wondering the same thing myself...wasn't he supposed to be a veteran influence on the team?

He was indeed. He didn't play a lot his last season here, which was Myers 3rd I believe, when the wheels really started to come off, but he was still there, and even better, was in the press box to see him play live. Kind of a poopty thing to do to call out Ruff when you were the captain of the team you're talking about.

I'm not absolving Ruff if that is indeed the case that he coached Myers poorly. Which I'm not entirely sure I buy. You don't get to 7th in all time wins by being a bad coach.

Edit: I think he's 5th now, passing Quinn and D¡ck Irvin this year.
