This is why the Sedins bring no value as vet leadership for a youth movement IMO.

They have a different style which you may not like. But is it effective should be the question. Do you see the youth or new guys slacking off or not competing hard?

I see mistakes by the young guys that lead to break downs or goals. Plus Sedins getting outpaced or outstepped on the defensive side now. Which is just how Father Time and the speed of the game being faster has gone for them.

Yeah I get that desire for the Cup. But there are life realities too for players. If that's the sole reason you choose a team likely to be disappointed. When has that ever worked for someone? I got Boston's French D legend to Avalanche before retirement.

But you know with how balanced and close teams are today anyone with a decent team can win in the playoffs. It's impossible to predict and injuries are huge. Players want to win with the team they are on. They usually believe with some changes and luck they have a chance. Edler probably thinks the Nucks can turn it around at some point and he wants to be here to be a part of it.

Remember, it takes years to develop D. If I had to trade a Canuck veteran D it would be Tanev for value and contract flexibility. I like Tanev better then Edler. But Edler is more durable. Can hit and hold the #1D position until Nucks develop one a few years from now.

I get that players have lives, I respect it. The older guys with kids have more to worry about than the bachelors. But the point was that the mentors the team has had are not breeding a "winning culture" as advertised. They help win a few games because they are decent hockey players, but doing everything it takes to win isnt what this team has been about for the past several seasons. I hope the kids hate losing and it starts a fresh core of guys that want to win

And for what its worth, guys waive NTC's or sign with teams purely to win all the time. Bourque didnt win the year he was traded but it happened the next year. Hossa went to the finals 3 years in a row trying to win before it did. Handzus waived to go to Chicago in 2013, Gaborik to LA in 14, Daley waived his last season, and others do it and dont win. Point is they want to win

Is it effective? No. Their betamale leadership resulted in collapse after collapse when it mattered.

To win yes. It's a factor. It's not the only one when they waive. Again depends on contract year too. Hossa did bounce around back then. Why hasn't he since cause of other factors. Last guy's I remember did a move to purely win was Teemmu and Kariya as you know didn't work out for the Avs.

Again, I don't discount that desire as a factor. But don't buy into the lip service rhetoric. It's a business and life decisions as well all play a part. Why NTC's are great for players to control their lives. That's what they want. They take less money to get them. It's not great for teams when GM's need to make moves for an ever changing environment.

Not to open the playoff can of worms but you were talking about youth movement and mentoring.

Well Hossa signed a 12-13 year deal, won 2 more cups after that and is still on a perennial contender so hes happy staying there for now, thats why he hasnt moved anymore

I am a support of NTC's, players earn them and they give up money for control of their lives and families. I know Edler is well within his right to not waive it, I was just voicing my displeasure that he appears complacent in going through a rebuild. His demeanor seems unaffected whether this team is going to the Stanley Cup or fighting for last place (which I guess can be good in some regards)
