Carol...Carol...Carol

Tanking, which the Canucks are doing for all intents and purposes, allows you access to the best young talent in the world before most, if not all, the other teams. It's a tried and true method, in part, to a successful rebuild.

Oh , and i dont have a hatred or anything for Edler, just wondering if with the youth movement you try and clean out some of the ntc baggage and get younger assets ?
- Tigersmyle

Welcome. Just adding from where you are going with this. As you noticed the only NTC's that JB got to waive were in their last contract year. Edler is good until 2019. Besides not having a 1D or anyone close yet to his ability in that role Edler has no desire to leave. He knows about the youth movement and is fine with it. JB if he thinks it's best for the team can ask in the off season if he finds a trading partner. But Edler holds all the cards.

Long time watcher, enjoyed reading all you guys for close to a couple years now and finally decided to join/post to get a strawpole response to a question .
Assuming you sit in the Jim Benning catbird seat and Aquilinis and Linden dont hamstring you ...do you go to Alex Edler at end of season and tell him : submit a list of 15 (more or less at your own discretion , just an arbitrary number here ) teams you will accept a trade to or i will expose you to Vegas in the draft ?And shout out to Carol great blogging !

Like your misplaced views about the state of postings on theses threads you are as wrong about this hockey point as well.

A NTC contract clause can be exposed in the Vegas expansion daft. Only a NMC must be on the protected list. Unless theoretically waived by the player. Which the NHL hasn't determined can be rcongnized to happen for the expansion draft.

I appreciate a twilight player like the Sedin's being "fine" with rebuilding, but Edler is in his prime years, where is the fire to win?

I know Botch is a pissy whiner, but this was a clip from his comment on Canuck's "winning culture"

7. Winning Cups hasn’t appeared to be a huge priority for veterans. Edler, reportedly, won’t waive his NTC. If true, he’s happy and comfortable here, and not anxious about winning a ring.

Hamhuis restricted his list to two teams, and by the time he made his decision one didn’t want him and the other wasn’t even good. Vrbata gave a list of eight teams he’d be traded to; only one was a playoff team.

Miller’s NTC list was based on geography.

Even a guy who I would defend to my dying days, Burrows, the guy who loves this game more than any player I’ve ever met, prioritized an extension and stability over going to the team with the best chance to win the Cup.

All of this is completely within their rights, but sometimes you’d think you’d hear a player go full Tanbir:

“I want a Cup!”

Guess the last one who did was Old 17, dammit.

Maybe a lot of cap space might not be a bad thing in a rebuild, if we have room to resign our youngsters and get a couple toxic contracts on a shorter term with add-ins and use the short term sign and flip approach to get picks , why not ?

Yeah I get that desire for the Cup. But there are life realities too for players. If that's the sole reason you choose a team likely to be disappointed. When has that ever worked for someone? I got Boston's French D legend to Avalanche before retirement.

But you know with how balanced and close teams are today anyone with a decent team can win in the playoffs. It's impossible to predict and injuries are huge. Players want to win with the team they are on. They usually believe with some changes and luck they have a chance. Edler probably thinks the Nucks can turn it around at some point and he wants to be here to be a part of it.

Remember, it takes years to develop D. If I had to trade a Canuck veteran D it would be Tanev for value and contract flexibility. I like Tanev better then Edler. But Edler is more durable. Can hit and hold the #1D position until Nucks develop one a few years from now.

I am a dinosaur , but i do understand the goon has left the building , for good. I just prefer a player who appreciates the opportunity the game gives him, like a Burrows. If we are bound to lose more than we win for a while, i want to see nothing left in the tank when they leave the ice.I remember getting some corporate seats once when they actually gave them to the peons. So close that you could see the scars on the faces of the players when they hit the glass. 10-1 Loss i think to Detroit , Franzen had a career game. Two things i noted Bertuzzi was standing on the ice when the puck was in the canuck zone , too lazy to even step off just watching the undermanned play in our end
The other thing i saw was even 8 goals up, right next to us in our seats we could see Stevie Y`s eyes. He was going ballistic on a teammate for a lazy play Thats the kind of leader and player you need to win championships

This is why the Sedins bring no value as vet leadership for a youth movement IMO.
