I don't know how much of it is an internal decision made between the coaches and goalies. To me, if I were a coach I would be talking to the goalies a lot to see how they feel. I would be confident that Mason could tell me if he wanted the second start or not. If Mason said he feels good and can go again, coming off a shutout...why not? I am not in that conversation though, just speculating. Maybe MJL can fill us in

Coming off a win against the Pens, and still on the periphery of a playoff race, to go out there and get embarrassed by a glorified AHL team that had lost their previous 10 games is a joke. Varsity said the team didn't quit. Really? Same old same old year after year.

Hextall's loyalty to the HC who I have no doubt advocated for the recent contracts handed out is disturbing.

It will be laughable if he believes that simply adding secondary pieces to this forward core along with the defensive prospects is a formula for winning. The forward core is simply not good enough and I'd be looking to trade Simmonds/Schenn. Maximize the draft pick and a full commitment to a rebuild and the future. Not half ass.

The Red Wings managed retools just fine in-between Cup teams, making the playoffs all the while. Oilers spent a decade in rebuild mode, picking first often, yet are only finally getting good now.

In other words, there is no one right or wrong method.

There is a right method....it starts by acquiring brilliant minds and inserting them into your organization. Compare both of your organizations in your example and the difference is staring you right in the face. As far as the Flyers are concerned, that is YET to be seen, but I am far from impressed thus far.

I'd also argue that the Flyers actually are rebuilding vs Retooling.

They hopefully have a foundational player in Provorov and have focused on building the blue line as a strength with a diverse pool of quality prospects. They've used their draft picks to draft for long term success rather than renovate the existing roster. They have depth at every position in the farm system.

Many people demanding a rebuild are actually asking for a demolition. They point to the Leafs as a prime example but ignore the fact that many of the Leafs key contributors are players that were there prior to their tanking strategy the last couple seasons.

Same with Edmonton. I can't remember them deciding to trade valuable contributors under contract for the sake of draft picks and prospects. They just sucked and experienced both good and bad draft luck in the process.

I find the Leafs to be prime example of where the Flyers are. They could continue to be a terrible bubble team for a decade and continue to trade assets for picks/prospects. Although the Leafs are recently having success because there draft picks are finally paying off, where as the Leafs prior picks during their "rebuild" never succeeded.
