the Blue Jackets, a team that has won 2 playoff games in its history, as part of the league's best rivalry?

Sharks / Kings
4 of the last 6 years they have met in playoffs , plus you have all the Northern Ca vs Southern Ca thing,
Going back a bit , it would have to be Red Wings / Avalanche , that was a nasty rivelry

The Islanders get to be part of a rivalry when they actually have a home.

Best rivalry in the NHL that doesn't have an East Coast bias....Blues vs. Blackhawks. These teams despise each other.

The NHL should try getting a team in Milwaukee and the rivalry they'll have with the Wild would be great.

Will never happen. Milwaukee is about 30 miles away from Chicago.

If you anything then you would know they are not Getting "kicked out" barclays projected how much they would make after 18-19 if isles were not there. They are in the middle of renegotiating the agreement, its a negotiating tactic. The prior year hockey was their highest grossing events. They want to give them less then 54mil a year. Its a business, Ledecky's first option is to stay in brooklyn as it makes the team worth the most. And FYI they are the NEW YORK Islanders... not the "Brooklyn Islanders". They are in NY which is their home. Now go back to being a fan of a bottom feeding team that nobody gives a crap about. Good day sir.

Pittsburgh and Columbus is not a great rivalry. It is a good match up this year, just like Minnesota and Chicago, Edmonton and Philly, St. Louis and San Jose. All good match ups this year. Probably a couple other ones I missed.

Decent rivalries that have been built up over the last 10-20 years would consist of:
Pittsburgh vs Washington (Crosby vs OV)
Tor vs Ott
Calgary vs Vancouver
Chicago vs Vancouver
Detroit vs Pittsburgh (two cup battles in a row)
Detroit vs Colorado- McCarty vs Lemieux days

Than you have the real rivals:
Edmonton vs Calgary - who can forget the Battles of Alberta
Detroit vs Chicago
Montreal vs Toronto
Philly vs Pittsburgh
St. Louis vs Chicago
Flyers vs Rangers/Isles and Rangers vs Isles (Battle of NY)
Isles vs Caps - who remembers 4 overtime periods!

The rivalry of rivalries:
Boston vs Montreal - We all have to admit it.

Maybe Columbus and Pittsburgh in about 20 years.

I don't think this is all that far off. CBJ's win history has nothing to do with whether a rivalry exists.

Since the playoffs a couple of years ago, there has been a heated element to the Pens/Jackets. I also think Tortorella's history with the Pens has helped build this rivalry.

I don't know that this will be a rivalry in five years from now, but I think it's going to get even more heated for the next few especially if they meet in the playoffs multiple times. Tortorella teams seem to fizzle out pretty quick though, so who knows if they'll even be a playoff team in a couple of years.

Like a lot of rivalries, when one of the teams are not very good there seems to be a little bit of cooling off, but I don't think there's a bigger NHL rivalry than Pens/Flyers.

I would argue that Pens/Flyers is one of the bigger rivalries in all of the major sports. Maybe not Chargers/Raiders big, but it's up there.

+1

Some rivalries ebb and flow due to playing each other a lot in the playoffs when both teams are pretty good. Then if one isn't as good, it's less of a story. Avs vs. Red Wings as an example.

Blues and Blackhawks really hate each other, unlike the Cubs vs. Cardinals which has mostly been a very friendly, good-natured rivalry. Same cities, same fanbases mostly, very different mindset towards the other's team.

All of this.

Pens/Flyers is ebbing because the Flyers have struggled a little bit the last couple of years. I'd say it's still one of the top rivalries in the NHL, but doesn't have quite the same "feel" recently.

One of the new rivalries that has been especially good this year is Nashville vs. Chicago. Their games have been absolutely electric.

Also, the Tanner vs. Garth rivalry is real.
