This team kills me. I'm patient and believe in drafting and all that, want nothing hasty, but I need some signs of good faith from Hextall and Hakstol to inspire me more than just the draft. Not talking some dumb signing or shortsighted trade. This season has been horrendous and one of the toughest to watch seasons in a while. Everyone has regressed; coaching, every single coach on this team, seems highly questionable with their systems and decision making; our core is getting older or is flawed; NHL talent evaluation has fallen short time and time again. Everything but the draft does bother me.

I just don't see a team that's Cup competitive for several years yet. They'll keep improving. The defense will look beautiful starting next year. But I just need some real signs this offseason that they self-identify some of these things beyond the prospects. I'm OK with a bad season; I get growing pains. But this is a bad season in which they actually seem to think they're competitive and want to win. Are we rebuilding still or competing? Which is it? Decide accordingly. My fear is little to nothing changes, and I'm talking about a lot more than personnel.

I don't care what anybody says, or how many games the Devils have lost coming in, this is the NHL and any team can beat another on a given night. It's not just that they lost, it's how they lost. I won't say that they didn't play hard, but they certainly didn't play inspired hockey with max effort. Last night they played a solid defensive game, and tonight it all breaks down. (Hakstol must have changed the system on the travel up to Jersey). Anyway, they should be a team that is desperate, and this team has no business taking any team lightly, and not playing with emotion and desperation. More than just a loss to me. How they lost also matters, and it's very disappointing.
