I think Dallas is light years ahead of Vancouver.

In 3 seasons, who is going to be in a better position to compete in the playoffs?

- bloatedmosquito

I have no idea. Vancouver is hovering near the bottom and Dallas is a mess at the moment. Both teams need some restructuring.

You lumping these teams into the same pile? No way. As steamer would say, we are 3 years away from being 3 years away from where Dallas is right now.

True, but many teams also have a blue chip prospect or two mixed in. That's what we are missing. Makes the lesser prospects stand out a bit.
- bloatedmosquito

I don't think Van is too bad for prospects. Add in a top 6 pick this year and a high 2nd rounder and all of a sudden we jump 10 spots in the rankings. I'd say on most teams outside of their top 5 ranked prospects. Most won't be playing an impact role in the NHL

Regardless, I think any college kid would say NO to Van and yes to Pitts, knowing that there's a real possibility to win a cup within 3 months of joining the NHL.

But keep in mind, Stecher said Yes, Rodin and Tram were happy to come over knowing a spot was waiting for them. AND Sven, Granlund, Chaput, Gaunce, Megna, Goldy, Boucher, they've all been given a shot (SB,MG with success) and that's got to be noticed and attractive to other kids who know they can make the team.

- Brooks_Light

I'm not discounting that there is an appeal for spots for youth. But Stecher is from Richmond. He was coming home. As for Rodin and Tree they were draft picks so had no other NHL option.

Plus ZAR singed with their AHL club. His NHL two way contract is for next season. So he doesn't get a shot at Pen's Cup run this season.

Anyway that's not the point. There are a lot of reasons for these kids to say no to Vancouver. Like you I believe that Nucks are offering youth movement. But they are not the only ones you know. So is it enough for a yes? That's where opportunities for Nucks close down. Good on JB for trying. He will have to try for everyone cause the NO is probably the most dominant answer for these guys to have a chance to land one.

They need depth. They have room to take on projects. That's how you get a Burrows or Tanev etc. That's part of the selection. You can't knock the choice in player just because it's not the shiny show room model that looks high end from the outset. Those types are already owned.
- Nuck4U

The second paragraph of the post you responded to addressed this.

Also Burrows and Tanev type players are not the best examples. For every 1 of them there are hundreds of busts, remember former 3rd round pick Yan-Pavel Laplante we signed? His ECHL stats are mediocre but we have him locked in for another 2 years. Dane Fox's contract just expired, total of 2 AHL games over his 3 year ELC. My preference is that other than goaltending (due to limited roster spots), we sign prospects we know are at least AHL calibre

Agreed.
Between their injury record to key players and their defensive purge this summer, they are still on a better trajectory. Between Seguin and Benn, it's almost as though they have the Twins entering their prime.

On a side note, that franchises young history is insane.
Founded in 94, won a cup in 99 and have a playoff percentage of 63%

cheers.

So, if you were dallas' GM you would choose a centre as your #1?

- bloatedmosquito

hahah I feel like we should go to the Dallas thread and have this conversation yet not acknowledge anybody else....

Dallas need Liljegren first and foremost as Klingberg is there only offensive minded D. but if he's gone they need a Left winger, and thats Tolvanen.

ASL was high when he typed that. Dallas certainly has better star players but our prospect pool has improved quickly. I can envision us in the playoffs in 3 years. A little luck at the draft is exactly what we need to reboot.

Of course, that's the way to build, and add a few pieces here and there through FA and trades. Yeah its hard to understand why hockey in Texas works, but they've had high, consistent attendance since the beginning, thank Modano for that. They were a playoff team right outta the gates and they won the SC in year 5 or 6 I think.

Top 3, I'd pick the best center man, Nico, Patrick or Vilardi - from everything I've read or seen, they're the ones. Bcus we chose OJ last year, I'd skip Liljegren, as I think we need more scoring and I don't believe he's a stud. In the future, OJ, Tram, Hutton, Stecher is the core, only time will determine if that's a good enough back end. I also for some reason think that Tippett is going to be this years Tkachuk, so I'm sold on him. I don't want Middlestadt bcus he's currently playing high school hockey and wants to go to UNI, and it'll be 3-4 years before he even see him in the NHL and my patience cant handle that. Plus I think there's guys available that will be able to join the lineup after next year. Finally, Tolvanen is a pure sniper and not a bad pick, then use our 2nd pick for D. that's just my opinion.

- Brooks_Light

At some point we need to add a top Dman. Its something this team has never had and still dont in the system.

If we take a center in the 1st then id look to add dmen with our more than likely two 2nds.

If we take Liljegrin then id look to add two centers with our 2nds.

All this is obviously if players are ranked fairly equal at the time of our pick for those who like to jjump all over anything people write on here.

I wouldnt take tolvanen in the top 15. We need centers, dmen and power wingers more.

I don't know. The best ranking placement I've seen is 13th (espn). I don't think we jump 10 spots to 3rd overall after this draft. Even if we get the first overall we don't jump that much.

This is where everyone loses each other in meaning. No one is saying let's sign a bunch of ECHL level guys. With the dismal array of talent in the AHL that's where the focus is for these signings. So to base it as lower is keying in on past failures. That's not what JB is looking to do in stocking up depth now. First is AHL caliber with NHL call up potential. At least that's where these players seem headed with signings. You see different?

two top5 picks and some nice trades/signing, we could be in the hunt/bubble team.

I'm hoping LE has a great world championship and start to next year, ups his value and gets traded for some return.

For me, this is the big question. BPA of draft for need with your first overall.

This franchise has time to draft for need but the NHL availability of BPA is enticing.

Hoping for a top 3 lotto win. Plus the 2nd from Columbus, and of course San Jose winning the cup. Fill yer boots JB.

No one is saying we should sign ECHL guys, but damn did Dane Fox's 20yo CHL stats look mighty impressive. Same with Cassels. Reality is, very few are actual late bloomers, more often than not they are scraps. I do have hope now that VAN owns its AHL affiliate they can develop players the right way, but Carcone, MacEwen, etc are not guys I am holding my breath to see if they turn into NHLers

Nice plan for draft. Though if you don't see OJ taken 5th overall in good draft as a top D then who can be that in this watered down draft?

I see good pieces that can be added. Just not bona fide super stars and high end first liners.
