That's a "what if?" trade for me. What if the Sabres fixed that (frank)ing door the first time it popped open? Then Kulikov doesn't go ass first into it. Then we see what we have. I mean he's never played a full season. He hit 81 once and has missed ~9 games a year. He missed a bunch of games in 11-12, only played 58 games. His rookie season was 68 games, but I don't know how much of that was him being the 7th guy and sitting a bunch because he was a rookie.

At the end of the day it depends on how much better Asplund is than the guy Florida drafted.

Don't forget we traded a 2nd (Adam Mascherin) and a 3rd (Linus Nassen) in that trade. Mascherin is mashing up the OHL with 92 points this year in 57 games.

So did our GM
- Sabresfan-365

And so did a lot of people outside of Buffalo. I'd be willing to bet that the only reason he's playing at all this year is because he's a UFA.

Remember when we traded for him some fans had him penciled in as Risto's partner?

Guilty as charged.

However, it has to remembered that when Murray traded for Kulikov, this was a short time after Kulikov had just played 1st pairing D with Ekblad. In the Panther's 1st round playoff loss, Kulikov was their best D-man and a beast. Thus the trade for Pysyk at the time was probably bang-on. Nobody could have predicted his spine being realigned during the exhibition season. No doubt this has impacted his skating and play all year long.

No excuses for Murray because this is his team but it is always easy to second guess trades, drafting etc after the fact.

again i dont buy into this. There were just as many people who looked at the overall body of work (not just 7 games with aaron ekblad) and realized hes essentially another bogosian.

I totally understand this, but this would be like a team giving up a 1st rounder after foligno's 12 game run as iginla 2.0.

Edit: not making a point about the price more about the decision based on one series

We also got Asplund. Not saying he's better or worse than either of them, but we did have something else coming back besides Kulikov obviously.

I was not a fan of that trade when it happened, but I was wiling to reserve my judgement of Kulikov until he played here. Being that he's been hurt all year, I still don't know whether or not I should like him. I know I haven't liked what I've seen. At all. But I also realize that a lot of it probably has to due with the injury so I'm trying not to fully pass judgement yet.

That's fair. I don't know if Murray will re-sign him or not but a healthy Kulikov would have helped.

This is a good post. BUT: the team, knowing Kuli was damaged goods, should have shelved him for the year instead of playing him all gimpy...whose call was that? GM or coach?

I can see DB telling TM "hey a banged up vet is better than bringing up a young guy or trying to trade for someone else...". Maybe that's just my dislike for Bylsma talkin.

Weber trade. I think he made a good attempt with Vesey that regardless of the outcome I think was shrewd and very calculated. Weber deal was fine. Moulson/McCormick for Mitchell and (2) 2nds was great. Too early to tell with the RoR or Kane trades, but IMO we got the best player in both. Also the goalie carosel

Lehner deal he overpaid, Kulikov deal was a disaster (have to wonder if injury played a big part in that result), McNabb trade was inexcusable and he should have targeted someone other than Gorges for sure if the cost was a 2nd rounder.

I find no fault or praise in the Flynn trade, Steward trade, Mitchell Trade, Enroth trade, or the Halak trade. He has won some, lost some and drawn even. No consistency is an issue, but also the gravity of the McNabb/Kulikov trades. If those two aren't made we may very well be a playoff team today.

The '16 draft looks very good. Nylander, Asplund, Pu, Hagel and Glotov all look good. The 2015 draft looks as strong but the '14 draft is weak.

Then flipped Mcginn for a pick that we sent to acquire Vesey's rights, which, while it didn't pan out, was well worth it imo
