Major factor in all of this..$$$
Even IF you get that D man we all want/need without trading kane... You still have to pay that Dman.. So even if you somehow get that guy it needs to be for money in money out

- yen6d1

youd definitely need to acquire a d-man on an incredibly favourable deal (martinez, muzzin, ekholm) and even then it would be tough

IMO, the writing was on the wall the moment he (frank)ed up during the draft, and they decided to pursue Okposo.

I can't think of another team that has locked up 5 big $$ forwards before they made the playoffs.

- sbroads24

not unless they had it saved somewhere else.

Who fits that mold? Moulson, ROR, Okposo and Risto

We would have to retain 110% of moulson's salary for someone to take him and the rest I am assuming we want to keep vs lose to make room for Kane

- lulags

we'd be talking about a scenario where two separate teams agree to a trade involving bogo and moulson where we dont retain salary.... so yea ill file that one under extreme long shot

And missing that scoring winger. Goals will suffer.

- cabin

But a good d man will improve the transition game and therefore increase possession and hopefully goals..

Agree!

Imo i bet you not even GMTM thought kane would get this hot... hence why he signed okposo. With kanes off ice stuff and injuries and expiring contract I think kyle was his replacement the moment he signed and i 100% see why

It could . Our forwards will be another year experienced too.
We have 11m in forwards(6) on the roster now that will need to be replaced or re-signed

Chicago top 4 Forwards make 30.7MM
Chicago top 4 Defense make 17.9

Assuming Jack gets a 7MM dollars a year deal and Reinhart a 5.5MM dollar a year deal. Tie up Kane a 6.5MM
Assuming we can unload Bogosian and Ennis (Bogosian and a 2nd i'd do for a 5th and agreement they take Ennis)

Buffalo top 5 Forwards make - 32.5MM

It is doable, IMO. Risto and McCabe are locked up for term, cheaper than what Chicago has. Just need to get defense in here some how.

Let's not forget Chicago brings in substantially more revenue by making the playoffs every year. Not a great comparison but I see your point.

There is a giant difference though.

Chicago won cups and knew that core could win it before they locked everyone up.

It's doable, but you are putting yourself in a corner if you do it

That has nothing to do with the cap though.

Mccabe only has 2 more years at 1.6 after this. Assuming he continues to play like at top 4, he'll be getting quite the raise. still possible they could make it work but you're still betting on moving some really bad contracts without having to retain or take salary back. He'd get GM of the year award if he could.

Yes it does suck. I just want to know who replaces his goals ?
Remember when Roy was gone ? Those goals were never replaced and was the beginning of the suck.

- cabin

Only way I'd move him in general is for a top 2 defender, right now. I could be persuaded to move him for a top 4 guy and a high end D prospect as well. But that's as of right now. Once next year starts, it'll be harder to move him for anything of any real value because he'll need a contract and teams will be afraid he'll walk at the end of the year.

It's all about timing in this particular case.

I agree, also may be part of the reason they chose Nylander as well.

That was not part of the equation. it was strictly salary cap workingings

Disagree on putting yourself in a corner though. You lock up your top end forwards for a long time.

Again, its getting defense in here that will be tricky.
using the first this year to trade for a D-man.
Trade a 2nd and a 3rd for a player that is going to be left unprotected.

I think the window in and around expansion is their best bet, once teams have it sorted it out you may not find a dance partner willing to move a 20 something d-man.

Its not a bad problem to have. It really all come down to Eichels LTD and unloading the dead weight this summer. GMTM does love to make a deal and he did say we all need to be patient after the bust at the deadline.

Moulson (Retain 1.5MM) Still frees up 3.5MM
Gorges gone after next year
McCormick gone after this year another 1.5MM.
There is your McCabe raise + .

Chump change to them, especially with the revenue they bring in from the Bills.
