so can we assume mason is gone and the plan is for stolarz to challenge Neuvirth for the job next year?

I do like Neuvirth, but mason is the better goalie, IMO.

perhaps they think Stolarz is ready to get a real shot and Neuvirth is really more of a backup.

- hammarby31

That's all I can assume. Stollie time it is. Also. Mason is the better goalie. He prob just doesn't want to back up and wants 4 mil.

When mase doesn't get traded, boy is he gonna be motivated to play down the stretch haha

I literally dont even know what to say about the Neuvy extension..

Just ridiculous unless they are planning on just using him as a backup this coming season and Stolarz or someone else is targeted to start.

Yep. I like both tenders but I'm not sure I'd have gone neuvy over mase. Maybe mase wanted too much. I wouldn't be surprised if injuries crop up again and well need to pray that stolli can carry the load. Very risky.

I just don;t think Neuvirth is a 55-60 game NHL starter. just don't

Or maybe being under a contract makes him more valuable in a trade???
- WhirlingDervish

They still need a goalie under contract and the longer they wait the less leverage they'll have with goalie's agents. This signing needed to get done now.

unless Neuvy has a NM, which i doubt, hextall could still move him. there's time. but i can't see why a team would want to do that...rather than just trade for him as a UFA.

i dunno.....

I hope we are shopping Mase hard now to Boston or SJ. He should be traded before Halak bc of his UFA status.

Oh I get that part, for sure. But maybe it makes Neuvy more valuable in a trade right now, then they sign Mase later, use him as the primary and Stolly as the back up. I'm wishful thinking, I know but...

If the plan is for him and Stolarz to compete next season it is fine. He has shown he can play well for stretches.
- J35Bacher

Agreed Hextall is leaving the door wide open for a goalie from within the organization to be an important part of the club next season. It's a good signing for Stollie and Lyons, they'll have a legit shot to come out of training camp to play for the flyers.

If I told people last week that the Flyers wouldnt be involved in a trade and that they would be in negotiations to resign both Neuvirth and PEB people would call me crazy.

I have and will continue to think that Mason is the better tendy and would've preferred they sign him. I think letting him walk is a mistake.

I think the deal itself is a sign that they dont want him getting picked in the expansion draft. I would've preferred one of the other goalies I mentioned, but it is clear this is the direction they preferred to go. 2.5 million is not a lot to spend on goaltending at all, and it is a very movable contract.

A raise for the goaltender with the worst save % in the league and an extension for a 4th line plug.
- PLindbergh31

I'm not quite that hard on these two signings.....but this can't be all he is going to get accomplished. If so....then I think Hextall is officially on the clock....curious to say the least......I always find it amusing when a team, not just the flyers say " we are being patient" yet do abosolutely nothing in terms of trying to make this team better today. Status quo on a disappointing season.

What are the chances they decide to go super young and potentially have Lyon and Stolarz if Nuevy goes down? Also maybe they bank on Sandstrom coming over?
