Getting a top RHD. I had to listen to part of the game on the radio and Maloney was saying he's good friends with the family and known him since h.s. Maloney said he's a good offensive defenseman, great kid, great family blah blah but struggles in his own end. On top of the fact almost his entire contract will be played at 30+

You are not wrong. If the Rangers want that top pair right side defensemen, and if they either can't land Shattenkirk or don't think he really is that guy, then it will cost a very good roster player to get him. That's just the way it is.

He will sign one of those contracts that a team will regret from year 3-4 or on. And the signing team, will know full well when they sign him, that they will likely regret the signing on the back half of the contract. But, some team will want to give it a run in the next 2-3 years, and they are willing to make that deal.

And, yes, he isn't elite defensively. Pretty good, but nothing special.
