I must say I don't like Shattenkirk for shunning all Canadian teams and all Western American teams. Many of my favorite teams are in that list. Washington is not a team I enjoy watching but this is a great match for what he wanted and what the Caps need. As for the Blues, they lose out on a huge player for the upcoming playoffs but they come away with two a first and a second pick for a player that was just going to go to Vegas for free in the expansion. No doubt in my mind that he will sign an extension and most likely a long one with Washington.

In the end the Caps win this one. Blues had to pull the trigger and really they had to because they had too many good dmen already which is not a bad place to be in. Still the odds of either of Washington's picks turning into a player that makes it to the NHL are slim since they are late rounders. Plus how often do you get a top 3 PP defense man. You can argue a player that rare is worth a few first round picks. Oilers and Buffalo are great examples. You can have tons of first round picks but it is rare to get an elite defender. Even rare to get an elite forward. Oilers are about 50/50 over the last decade and 4 of those were first overalls. They were only able to get a guy like Larsson for the second best of those 4.

St. Louis made a good deal on a bad situation. They lost 3 players last year for nothing and that isn't a strategy you want to have.

In the cap era you need to get something young, cheap, draft pick etc for a UFA unless you are legit for the Cup.
