Leafs didn't need a rental 4th line center. Gauthier/Smith we;re fine.
The Boyle deal only makes sense if they have another deal in place.
They aren't getting a second rounder for Smith.

But maybe they have a better deal in place to move Bozak or Kadri to improve the d line. Then Boyle becomes the short term replacement.

FFS they aren't trading Kadri, JVR and Bozak probably, although i'd like them to keep JVR till next year.

Wait till you watch him play tommorow. He's a very nice player to have on your 3rd/4th line.

He scores 15 goals a season. Yeah. Smith and the Goat don't come even close to that.

Damn nice move. Boyle is a huge upgrade on the PK over Smith and a good shutdown guy. Great Hughson guy as well.

Again, why would the Leafs move Kadri now? He's having a career year in the first year of his new contract. Bozak sure, but Kadri would make no sense at all.

Smith is a long ways off from "fine".
- markmark

You don't need a Sidney Croseby to play 4th line minutes.
You need a guy who can win face offs, and not get scored on every shift. That's it.
Both Gauthier and Smith fit this bill.
Boyle is better no question, but the leafs didn't waste a second round pick to replace Ben Smith.

didn't think I could hate them more
- Soshnikov

you would have hated him more with Montreal.... Gallagher, Burrows as wingers with Shaw at center.

that... combined with "soft" officiating would have been a disaster.

Boyle is a nice player.
But I don't agree with you on Gauthier's evaluation - I think Gauthier can become a steady force for the Leafs as a 4th line C, even adding 10-15 goals per season.

People keep saying a line of Martin-Boyle-Sosh will be scary to play against... the only who will be scared on the ice with those guys is Andersen.

Well, it's fair value tbh. I think that we're all just scarred from the way that the Kessel deal worked out

Leafs could still collapse and get a top 10 pick...

Yes. Maybe in 3-4 years. He has quite a ways to go.

Has the conditions of the 2nd Rd pick been real eased yet?

Im assuming if he re-signs or leafs make playoffs otherwise it's a 3rd maybe.

I've loved how the Goat has looked but man I kinda want to resign Boyle now. He took 3y/$6m at 30, so I'd bet you can get him again for that at worst.
