Barry Trotz will teach him the 5 man in the neutral zone game very quickly.

TSN.CA is reporting that the Islanders are in on Duchene. Sportsnet.ca has nothing. Go figure...
- hpk90

The Isles have over $6m in prorated cap space so they could easily make a play for him.

Player to watch that hasn't been mentioned yet- JML on the Bruins. Hawks were interested in him last year and he still skates extremely well.

Do we really need another 5'8" player in Tyler Johnson though?
- hpk90

Johnson would be an excellent add, no matter his size. He can be both a scoring and shutdown center. Too bad he'd cost too much to get. Lightning would be silly to overreact to a bad luck season by giving away a good center.

@jprutherford
I believe the Blues do have a trade in place for Shattenkirk. It sounds like he's going to Washington.

That would be a lot of fire power for the Caps.

apparently they're just making sure and part of it might be that they didn't want the penguins to get him

True but i'm guessing Wash gave up quite a bit in the trade. Let's wait and see.

I also believe the Isles and Avs were closing in on sending Duchene to New York but deal fell through. Still have time b4 deadline tho.

Depends what they give up to land him. Likely the Blues got something from the Washington roster in return.

I like to look at things from different perspectives, and it might not even be easy for the comaparison to work.
Both Brian Boyle and Tomas Jurco get traded for second round picks.
We are not sure which one of the two Toronto seconds Tampa gets
Both are slightly before the Hawks second used to acquire Jurco.
(Approximately 52 or 56, as opposed to the Hawks 58.)
And I didn't count the fact that exHawk now leaf property bryon Frose was an add on in the Boyle deal....
Boyles Cap hit was 1.1 million more.
Whereas Bolyle is a big man checker PK and veteran leader,

Tomas Jurco is an entirely different type player, a good hand player, less experience, results or freedom as he is RFA.

You just wonder after the Wild picked up the physical White along with Hanzal if the Hawks would want a chance to have waited before acquiring Jurco and loaded up on the short term.

Not criticizing StanBo as the guy he acquired is a reason reup, but unless he beats the pants off of Dubnyk, I wonder if Boyle was better.

Would be silly to give up Niskanen, but Wilson is no great loss.

If Blues ate around half Shattenkirk's salary, the Caps didn't have to move a roster player.

Jurco was traded for a 3rd round pick, not a 2nd.

Games were no where near playoff hockey , especially the Blues game, lots of shots but not a lot of much else. Wait till all the marbles are on the table come April. Schmaultz is just having a nice little run now , teams will start paying more attention to him and shu him off the puck like a little flea. Not saying he won't be better down the road but Kane or Toews he is not. Gonna let this kid grow and not drink little Hawkie Kool aid on him now. I am disappointed but accept it that Bowman, unless there is a miracle going to happen can't get Toews a Bonified NHL winger come playoff time.

Don't you recognize talent?! Schmaltz is already a bonafide NHL winger (and someday perhaps a center), albeit a young one. He can't prove he will perform in the playoffs, until he plays in the playoffs.

Lol you are right!

I just am lamenting Boyle not a hawk, and loss my focus, still shell shocked by
Penguins paying a second for Hainsey.

But reality ( a third) makes thing better, not like Oduya still injured and folks calling for him to play for hammer in an emergency.

Only saying Niskanen because I was thinking the Blues would want a "similar" player in return.

So it's taken him this long to conclude he is playing for a rinky dink franchise and only now because they traded Hanzal? Doan has been a marginal NHL player for a few years now, he wouldn't be getting paid what he is making currently by any other team, because those teams don't play the cap floor game like Zona.
- RickJ

Agree but he might not be a bad gamble for a playoff run.
