If they chump up big for Oduya, I would not count on a 100% Hammer. Cause, effect.

I guess that is part of it.

And if Stanley doest n't something done, he will fall back on "we're happy with our team, we've been clear we weren't going to do anything big."

Even though they "pursued Jurco for 6 weeks!"

I DO believe they went into the deadline hoping to avoid anything that felt like an overpay and that might limit anything "big." Because the TDL is a sellers market.

But it would be highly naive and wrong to think not getting something of significance done means they didn't try. They have. They are. And they probably will right up til Wed.

Oduya isn't a sexy name but he's a plug and play kinda guy. He's got chemistry with the team, especially Hammer who he'd likely play with if both are healthy, and know's the system already. Allows for you to play Keith and Seabrook together again and go with Kempny, Soup, and TVR as your 3rd D-man pair with Rosi going to the press box in case of an emergency during the Playoffs. Wouldn't/shouldn't cost too much from Dallas since he's had an injured/down year. Expiring contract. Lots of things to like about that kinda move from the Hawks perspective.

couldn't agree more. to much defensive depth is never a bad thing... just think about the st. louis series last year... woof.

Kinda there, myself. But, I have heard their interest in Oduya right now is as a plug and play solution for a possible period of time without Hjalmarsson or if he goes down again. That's what I heard.
- John Jaeckel

JJ--

Interesting.

I know I keep saying it, but Hainsey seems more and more appealing in retrospect.

Reliable veteran (and same age as Johnny O), but not coming off injury. Could have probably got him cheap, too.

Just good depth on the blueline.

EDIT: I also worry about Bowman getting jobbed by Nill again...

Based on what I hear last night/this morning, and who I heard it from (three separate good sources) I would say the Hawks are going maximum overdrive after Oduya. Dallas has to dance though and Bowman should NOT get hosed twice by Nill in a deal for Oduya.
- John Jaeckel

Good to know JJ. Getting Oduya back is only a good add if he doesn't get FLEECED again. AND.......... even though Schmaltz is looking great, do you actually think that Q wants to start the playoffs with him taking on that kind of pressure/workload as a rookie. I certainly don't want him involved in any deal but at the same time, I'm hoping that they're not planning on putting all that pressure on him. This team still needs a top 6 forward addition to be legitimate contenders this year. IMO.

I don't understand why they wouldn't want to overpay though. The core isn't getting any younger, and if they mortgage the future and end up with a cup, it wont matter the cost.

I get not wanting to trade key roster players and picks for the draft in Chicago, but there really isn't that much of a future to save for.

Burrows was on the Hawks radar. I'd still look for them to upgrade with a physical winger with some skill, in the Burrows mold.

Do you think that is JO comes back in a trade, he will sign a contract similar to Campbell's this season?

It depends on the price. The Dmen have not started moving yet this year. Once they do we can find out what a fair price is. There are a ton of good 4/5 Dmen that will be moved before the TDL.

Curious, what's really left to pursue, that could make much of an impact?

Hawks had a physical Forward that had some skill and could have probably scored on occasion in Dale Weiss...and they never played the man

I'm not sure I would move NS down if we got another forward. Heck if we got Duchene or Palat, I think I would put them with Hossa on the 3rd line. and move kruger down. what is the time Difference 5 X 5 between 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines? probably very little. Beyond that I would probably move panik down before NS.

I don't think we are getting either. Gionta is still out there and hanson is on the market.

Just tweeted out to Scott Laughlin during his radio show on Sirius XM NHL Network....."You heard it here first Scott, come summer time....Crow is traded for cap relief and Darling is #1."

His response: "I don't think so....."

So if it does happen.....I give you the credit and hopefully get some pub for the blog. If not, its just Espo being Espo.....ie, wrong all the time.

I think it's a situation where Stan and Co. realize that they need to make some improvements to the team to get another deep run in them, but for the first time in their run the whole "at any cost" plan isn't the best idea.

They see the writing on the wall or the light at the end of the tunnel if you will, that there is only so much more hockey left in Hossa and Keith and with it likely either Seabrook or more likely Crawford being gone at the end of the year. This year and maybe next is the last run this Core will have together and they know they can not afford to overpay in terms of Draft picks and players that have shown they can play in the NHL i.e. Hartman and Schmaltz because those kind of players are EXTREMELY valuable to the Hawks who are tight against the cap.

Unfortunately those are the guys of course everyone is gonna ask for since they've shown they have at least some of "it". Guys like DeBrincat, Fortin, Forsling, etc. have lots of promise but are no guarantee. Of course they will try to improve, but they won't go above and beyond to get one guy.

I don't either, tends to make me think maybe we are done for this trade deadline.

Keep in mind the Leafs 2nd round pick will be about 10 places before the Hawks. So the Hawks probably would have had to give a 2nd round pick and something much better than Froese.

Well Boyle's off to the Toronto.

Honestly, kind of glad he didn't become a Hawk. Being from NY, I had my share in watching him. He would have been a great upgrade in the circle, but I have always felt like he is a tad overrated. Guy is so freaking slow..

You watch Paul, it's gonnabe fricken Iginla Wed afternoon you watch , lost out on Hanzel, Boyle. Shhhhheeeett. I would fricken die f the Hawks landed Duchene, doubt it though.
Someone mentioned Rassmusson, he's only playing because of the cap. He blows, soft on the corners ,not strong and would not make any other roster, well maybe Phoenix if there was no cap. I would not have no problem seeing him go bye bye.
Once Jurco gets some games in ,he should be ok.
Back toDuchene, IF, I repeat IF that where to happen, he goes eeeemeeediatley on Toews wing. They aren't tradin the farm to get him to play 3rd line center. Schmaultzy, take a seat junior and observe.

Some skill is a stretch. He only ever did well in MTL. Just ask the Flyers.
